A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Of "2021 South And Southeast Asia Commodity Expo And Investment Fair Online Exhibition"

This report is based on the author’s simulated simultaneous interpretation of “2021South and Southeast Asia Commodity Expo and Investment Fair Online Exhibition”,which was held from August 25 th to 29 th,2021.The author of this report adopted the appraisal resources in the three subsystems of the Appraisal Theory to analyze the simulated simultaneous interpretation and the expression ways of the appraisal resources and interpreting skills were discussed.Appraisal Theory,developed by Dr.James Martin on the basis of Systemic Functional Linguistics,focuses on the attitudes,emotional intensity,and source of value expressed in the discourse.Martin’s Appraisal Theory is divided into three subsystems:Attitude,Engagement,and Graduation.Attitude refers to the judgment and appreciation of human behavior,texts/processes and phenomena made after psychological influences.Engagement refers to the use of engagement resources by speakers to adjust to the responsibilities and obligations assumed by discourse.Graduation is the grading of the degree of attitude resources and engagement resources,with attitude as the core to show the strength of emotions.In the process of interpretation,the author adopted interpretation skills to properly convey the speaker’s appraisal resource and promote the communication between the speaker and the audience according to the appraisal resources in the speaker’s discourse.In this report,the author analyzed different types of appraisal resources and chose appropriate interpretation skills to convey the information and appraisal resources of the speakers.In order to accurately convey the speakers’ appraisal resources and communicative intentions,the author adopted literal translation or changed the category of appraisal resources,and at the same time,she appropriately omitted some resources or reduced the graduation meaning by literal translation,so that the audience could reduce their attention to negative information and dilute the seriousness of the appraisal discourse.The analysis of this report reveals that the appraisal resources in the interpretation,as a bridge of communication between the speakers and the audience,play a key role in being conducive for interpreters to meet the needs of the audience.The Appraisal Theory is helpful for interpreters to analyze the significance of appraisal resources in discourse and improve the effect of information transmission in interpersonal relations.It provides feasible theoretical support and guidance for future interpretation practice analysis.
