Abstract/Summary:
As China supports efforts to share Chinese culture with other countries, the splendid traditional Chinese culture has gained increasing attention from the global community. The translation of relevant texts regarding Chinese farming culture,an important part of traditional Chinese culture,is able to help promote the wisdom of Chinese working people. While agricultural science popularization texts,as one of the vehicles of the farming culture, boast a broader readership than their technical counterparts. Therefore,it is necessary to delve into translation of agricultural science popularization texts. This translation practice report focuses on the translation of Chapters 2 and 3 of the agricultural science popularization book Chinese Bayberry Cultivation System of Xianju County,Zhejiang Province. In terms of words and expressions, there are various types of vocabulary in both chapters, such as agricultural terms,four-character words, and culture-loaded words. At the sentential level, multiple run-on sentences are employed, and most sentences are loosely organized in a paratactic and inductive manner. As for paragraphs, the sentence groups in the text are connected primarily by implicit logical relations, and repetition is the commonly used cohesive device.Combined with the three-dimensional transformation of eco-translatology,this report aims to analyze the translation cases from the perspective of language, culture and communication.Regarding the language dimension, the translation methods at the lexical, sentential and textual levels are investigated based on the differences between Chinese and English. At the lexical level, the part-of-speech of some words is converted, and the equivalent words and expressions in English are selected based on specific texts;at the sentential level, the translation approaches of run-on sentence segmentation, hypotactic and deductive transformation are adopted;at the textual level, the logic between sentence groups is visualized and the cohesive devices are altered to achieve the ecological balance between the original and translated texts. For the ecological balance in the culture dimension, transliteration plus annotation is utilized for the translation of material culture-loaded words, while to translate linguistic ones,English idioms are flexibly applied and the images in the original text are reproduced. In terms of the communication dimension, based on the bilingual communicative intentions, the essential information of the four-character subtitles is highlighted to the maximum extent in certain frameworks, and the esoteric agricultural terms without corresponding translation in English are presented by paraphrasing,so as to retain the communicative information of the original texts. This report analyzes the translation of agricultural science popularization texts using the three-dimensional transformation of eco-translatology,which not only broadens the application field of eco-translatology,but also provides analytically tractable cases for research based on the translation of other agricultural science popularization texts.Meanwhile, the author also hopes to contribute more to the international communication of Chinese farming culture with this paper, and to facilitate the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.
