After the reign of Emperor Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty, with its huge capital reserves, good commercial reputation, and the establishment of a branch network of important commercial ports throughout the country,Shanxi Piaohao leapt to become the financial champions of the late Qing Dynasty. After the outbreak of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, the Qing government urgently needed to concentrate national financial resources to deal with the crisis in order to cope with internal and external troubles. However,at this time, the Qing government was faced with two problems: one was the issue of the settlement of official funds such as "Jingxiang" and "Xiexiang";The second is the issue of raising and paying war reparations.Faced with this historical opportunity,Shanxi Piaohao Exchange, with its strong financial strength, quickly became an important participant in remitting official funds for the Qing government, and for a period of time,it was in a monopoly position on accepting official funds. From the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement to the Gengzi Rebellion,Shanxi Piaohao obtained relatively rich profits and income through the business of accepting and remitting official funds for the Qing government. With the establishment of the Hubu Bank of the Qing Dynasty and the official banking and money bureaus throughout the country after the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty, the official funds and foreign exchange business engaged in by Shanxi Piaohao was gradually recovered by the Qing government, which greatly impacted the business structure of Shanxi Piaohao and caused them to lose some of their survival foundation; At the same time,Shanxi Piaohao were also facing fierce competition from foreign banks and banks, coupled with the severe political, economic, and military situation in China at that time, and various factors combined to bring the once-glorious Shanxi Piaohao to the end of their lives. In the Qing Dynasty,it was strictly forbidden for merchants to interfere in the payment of official funds. However, the outbreak of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement during the Xianfeng period impacted the traditional way of transporting official funds, and whether the official funds could be transported on time was related to whether the financial security of the Qing government could be guaranteed. At the same time, the original method of transporting silver also had some drawbacks, forcing the Qing government to make adjustments to respond to the crisis. In addition, considering the particularity of official foreign exchange business,it is decided to use rent seeking means to carry out official foreign exchange business. The business of accepting official funds for foreign exchange of Shanxi Piaohao almost ran through the entire late Qing Dynasty, from allowing merchants to exchange funds during the Tongzhi period to the abdication of Xuantong,Shanxi Piaohao gradually withdrew from the field of official funds for foreign exchange. The official funds and foreign exchange business of Shanxi Piaohao has experienced a process from its inception(1851-1893),prosperity(1894-1903),and decline(1904-1912),which also reflects the overall development process of Shanxi ticket bank industry in the late Qing Dynasty. The development of the official funds transportation business of Shanxi Piaohao not only had an impact on themselves, but also had an impact on the development of modern industry, commerce, and other financial institutions. For Shanxi Piaohao, the development of official funds business has broken the tradition of ticket banks only engaging in private exchange business, further broadening the business scope of ticket banks, enriching their business structure, and further promoting the prosperity and development of ticket banks. In terms of the development of modern industry and commerce, the official funds business of Shanxi Piaohao enabled them to accumulate a large amount of idle funds in a short period of time, which also enabled them to lend these funds to banks and some industrial and commercial enterprises, thus promoting the development of banks and industry and commerce to a certain extent. For other financial entities, the official money business was originally dominated by Shanxi Piaohao, but over time, financial entities such as southern Piaohao and banks began to intervene in the official money business, which broke the monopoly of Shanxi Piaohao on the official money business.Since the Qing government allowed the private sector to accept foreign exchange,Shanxi Piaohao has established an unusual official and commercial relationship with the Qing government through official funds acceptance business. The two sides have engaged in frequent political and economic interactions, generally showing positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, the positive political and economic interaction has enabled Shanxi Piaohao to promote their own development through official funds and foreign exchange business; On the other hand, the negative political and economic interaction has not only impacted the official fund acceptance business of Shanxi Piaohao, but also brought a huge impact on the development of Shanxi Piaohao themselves.
