From 1945 to 1952,the Truman Administration’s U.S.policy towards the Philippines was an important period in the formation of the special relationship between the United States and the Philippines. On the one hand, after World War II,the heroic struggle of the Philippine people won the national independence of the Philippines after the war.On the other hand, the United States had to comply with the soaring enthusiasm for national liberation in the Philippines, using economic and trade incentives to gain military bases and privileges in the Philippines, and signed the1951 United States Philippines Joint Defense Treaty, thereby laying the foundation for the special relationship between the United States and the Philippines. The United States’ policy towards the Philippines during the Truman administration was deeply influenced by the post-war decolonization wave, the development of the international cold war,the regional situation in East Asia, and domestic factors in the United States and the Philippines.First of all, after the end of World War II,the Western colonial system gradually disintegrated, and the tide of decolonization became an irresistible trend. After unremitting resistance, the Philippine people finally got rid of the occupation and colonization of the United States.Secondly, with the global expansion of the United States Soviet Cold War,in East Asia, the United States pieced together an island chain strategy to contain the socialist camp, and the Philippines,as an archipelagic country in the Western Pacific, became an important frontier of its containment strategy.Thirdly, after the outbreak of the Vietnam Anti French War and the Korean War,the geostrategic value of the Philippines further highlighted. The United States forcibly leased military bases in the Philippines, established a U.S.Philippine military alliance, and formed a special relationship between the United States and the Philippines. In addition, the nationalism of the Philippine people has played an important role in promoting the adjustment of the United States’ policy towards the Philippines. From 1945 to 1952,the Truman administration’s policy towards the Philippines was the product of the United States’ global Cold War strategy. The United States,in the form of a military alliance between the United States and the Philippines, incorporated the Philippines into its strategy of the East Asian Island chain in the global cold war, exacerbating the strategic confrontation and regional security in East Asia.On the one hand, the United States has continuously interfered in the internal affairs of the Philippines through base privileges, trade, and assistance, making the Philippines a "protectorate" of the United States; On the other hand, the domestic politics, economy, and diplomacy of the Philippines are deeply influenced by the United States, and their dependence on the United States is deepening. At the same time, the anti-American forces in the Philippines have become an important variable affecting the relationship between the United States and the Philippines. |
