The U.S. Government’s Vietnamese Refugee Policy (1975-1981)

After the outbreak of the Cold War,influenced by the domino theory,in order to curb the expansion of communism,the United States government misjudged the importance of Vietnam,sent a lot of benefits to the South Vietnamese government to maintain the corrupt rule of the South Vietnamese government,and after 1964,it took ground troops to help South Vietnam fight the war.However,due to the strong resistance of the Vietnamese Communist Party,the United States has not been able to achieve a decisive victory in the Vietnam battlefield.The huge cost of the United States trapped in the quagmire of the Vietnam War has aroused the dissatisfaction of the domestic people,and the situation of the Soviet Union attacking the United States has also been formed internationally.Therefore,the United States is eager to get out of the quagmire of the Vietnam War.Therefore,the United States did not hesitate to sell the interests of South Vietnam to make peace with North Vietnam,resulting in the precarious situation of the South Vietnamese regime after the withdrawal of American troops.However,the U.S.authorities lacked a clear understanding of the situation in Vietnam,misassessed the strategic intentions of the North Vietnamese army and the combat effectiveness of the South Vietnamese army,which led to the rapid and large-scale retreat of the South Vietnamese army,resulting in large-scale war refugees.For the treatment of these refugees,the U.S.government has not been able to come up with a feasible way.When the North Vietnamese army soldiers were under the city of Saigon,they began to evacuate Vietnamese refugees in a hurry,and the evacuation work was very chaotic.Many people who served the United States did not get evacuated in time.After the reunification of Vietnam,the Viet Cong liquidated the Vietnamese who had served the South Vietnamese government and the U.S.military.These people were eager to flee Vietnam,and the United States also actively encouraged Vietnamese to flee,but the lack of navigation equipment and experience led to a very high mortality rate of Vietnamese refugees.And the strict immigration policy of the United States has led to a large number of refugees stranded in Southeast Asian refugee camps.The conditions of refugee camps are very difficult to trigger a humanitarian crisis,which has aroused widespread concern in the international community.In order to save its international image,the United States had to negotiate with the Vietnamese government to absorb some South Vietnamese into the United States through safe and formal channels,and began to relax restrictions on Vietnamese refugees entering the United States.
