Class Shifts In E-c Translation Of Social Science Texts Under The Guidance Of Translation Shift Theory

The End of the Anthropocene was published in 2021 by Michael Gormley,who interrogates the end of the Anthropocene and its following epoch by combining science fiction,science,ecology,and mathematics.The first and second chapters are selected from it as the translation material,which focuses on the role of human beings in the universal ecosystem and the biotic interrelations between humans and nature.Therefore,it is hoped that the translation of this book can contribute to the circulation of ecological knowledge and raise people’s ecological awareness.It is well known that there are distinct differences in the use of word classes between Chinese and English.Therefore,in the process of E-C translation,the translator should flexibly change the word classes so as to make the target texts conform to the expression habits of the target language.Catford’s Translation Shift Theory is classified into Level Shifts and Category Shifts,while Category Shifts can be further divided into Structure Shifts,Unit Shifts,Intra-system Shifts,and Class Shifts.This translation report mainly discusses the application of Class Shifts in the translation of social science texts,involving the shifts of nouns,adjectives,prepositions,verbs and adverbs.It is found that the Class Shifts cast off the restriction of forms and lay stress on the accurate transferring of meaning.Therefore,Class Shifts are practical and instructive for the translation of social science texts.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter includes an introduction to the source text and the significance of this translation report.Chapter two elaborates on the process of translation,including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter three introduces Catford’s Translation Shift Theory and the significance of Class Shifts for social science text translation.The fourth chapter focuses on the case studies,in which the translator selects twenty examples from the translation practice and discusses the applicability of Class Shifts in social science text translation.The last chapter makes a summary of the translation report,pointing out its findings and limitations.
