A Report On Simulated C-E Consecutive Interpretation Of The Next Stop-Mars

In recent years,China has made significant strides in science and technology,particularly in the aerospace industry.As a crucial platform for establishing the country’s image and showcasing its achievements,domestic science and technology documentaries are increasingly essential in the realm of publicity.One such example is the documentary The Next Stop-Mars,which chronicles China’s first mission to explore Mars.This documentary boasts highly professional content,a unique language style,and a profound sense of humanity.As of now,two episodes have been released,and its publicity is beneficial in promoting cross-cultural exchanges and enhancing global understanding of contemporary China’s scientific and technological advancements.For the task of Chinese-English simulated consecutive interpretation,the first episode of the documentary The Next Stop-Mars was chosen as the source material.The interpreter conducted the on-site practice of consecutive interpreting,following a thorough review of relevant interpreting strategies,analysis of parallel documentary text features,establishment of a glossary,and extensive practice in parallel documentary interpretation.The entire interpreting process was recorded and the audio was transcribed into text for post-interpreting assessment and reflection.In the process of interpreting,the interpreter employed different interpreting strategies to tackle various language difficulties.At the lexical level,the interpreter used the strategy of free interpreting to deal with technical terms,and adopted the methods of transliteration plus explanation and free interpreting to cope with culture-loaded words;at the syntactic level,the interpreter used the strategies of division and omission to deal with long and difficult sentences,and adopted the methods of amplification and the change of voices to cope with the subject-less sentences;at the stylistic level,the interpreter used the strategy of sentence restructuring to deal with the colloquial language,and adopted the method of omission to cope with the dense narration of information.Finally,this report summarizes the gains from this simulated interpretation practice,reflects on the limitations and shortcomings,and puts forward several suggestions,hoping that this practice experience can serve as a reference for future interpretation activities of similar types.
