| Since the implementation of the "Double Reduction" policy in 2021,corresponding policies have been adopted throughout the country aimed at strictly controlling homework load, improving homework quality, enhancing homework management efficiency, alleviating the academic pressure on primary and secondary school students, and promoting the development of quality education. The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)also emphasizes that English teaching activities should not be limited to imparting language and cultural knowledge in the classroom, based on the unit teaching objectives, taking into account individual differences, but also to impart language skills and learning strategies, and extend beyond the classroom to promote the development of students’ core competencies. Therefore,as an effective supplement and necessary part of classroom teaching, homework has always been highly valued in English teaching in China, and it has become the key carrier and specific path for implementing the "Double Reduction " policy. However, for a long time, research on homework has mostly focused on homework design, and there is little research on the current situation of junior high school English homework. Therefore, this article investigates the current situation of junior high school English homework under the "Double Reduction" policy, and analyzes the factors that affect junior high school English homework, providing suggestions and inspiration for the design and completion of English homework.Combining quantitative and qualitative research, based on multiple intelligence theory, constructivism theory, and zone of proximal development theory, with 321 students from X Junior High School in Chifeng City and 84 English teachers as the research subjects, conducted data collection through surveys, interviews, and classroom observations, this study aims to answer the following two research questions: 1)What are the current situation of junior high school English homework? And what are the existing problems of it? 2)What are the factors affecting the English homework of junior high school under the "Double Reduction" policy? In this study, the quantitative data from student and teacher questionnaires are analyzed by SPSS27.0,and the factors that may affect English homework under the "Double Reduction " policy were explored through interviews with six English teachers and one viceprincipal,as well as classroom observations. The research findings indicate that: Firstly, the current situation of English homework in junior high schools is good, but the impact of the "Double Reduction" policy on English homework is not significant. Therefore, there is room for improvement in homework understanding, design, evaluation and correction. In terms of homework understanding, both teachers and students recognize the positive role of homework, but this recognition is limited. In terms of homework design, the homework volume and difficulty are moderate, suitable for most students’ levels, but the homework design is monotonous, and the homework content relies too much on textbooks and exercise books.Although the homework types are diverse, the structure is not reasonable, and the way homework is assigned is uniform but lacks flexibility. In terms of homework evaluation and correction, both teachers and students believe that this stage is very important for English learning. Therefore, teachers should correct homework in a timely and serious manner and give feedback, and students should reflect on their mistakes before the homework review.Although there are various subjects involved in homework evaluation, teachers are still the main evaluators, mainly based on their teaching in the classroom.Overall, teachers tend to focus more on consolidating classroom knowledge and neglect the development of students’ language sense and other abilities, without fully considering the needs of different students.Secondly, the factors influencing English homework in junior high schools under the "Double Reduction" policy can be summarized into four aspects: the current constraints of the educational system, the imperfect management system of schools, and the teachers’ and students’ own thoughts and behaviors.Based on the above research results, the author proposes specific suggestions for scientifically and reasonably designing and completing homework from different perspectives, combining the requirements of the "Double Reduction" policy. The significance of this study is to improve the current status of English homework and provide some reference and guidance for teachers to further optimize homework design. At the same time,it enriches the theoretical research on homework in junior high school to a certain extent. |
