During the late Qing Dynasty, every aspect of society was undergoing unprecedented and earthshaking changes,as was poetry.Qing poetry was particularly impressive in the late Qing Dynasty. In the poetic circles, there were Huang Zunxian,Liu Yazi, and others who were constantly innovating, making progress and carrying out revolution,Chen Sanli,Zheng Xiaoxu, and others who explored the peak of the poetry country and constantly expanded the art field,as well as various schools of thought in the Han,Wei,Tang, and Song dynasties.Among them, the Tongguang style is a force that cannot be ignored in poetry inheritance. This school has a large number, complex composition, and far-reaching impact.Xia Jingguan is one of the poets of Tongguang style and he is very famous for his serious and rigorous poetry. His poetry combines the advantages of poetry from the Han,Wei,Tang, and Song dynasties. He is modest and learns from others. His poetry also combines the strength of Dongye and the elegance of Wanling.Xia Jingguan experienced three periods: the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and New China. When he was a teenager,he studied hard and took exams. In his middle age,he worked hard and became an official. In his later years,he concentrated on writing poetry. His creative life is also long and rich, and he has created over a thousand poems, including nineteen volumes of "Poems in the Ancient Tower of Tolerance" and four volumes of "Poems in the Ancient Tower of Tolerance".His early poetry was elegant, his mid poetry was deep, and his late poetry reflected his indifference to fame and wealth. In Xia Jingguan’s poetry, there are two main poetic styles, one is high and simple, the other is clear, vigorous, and meaningful. The former is mainly manifested in his ancient poetry, and the choice of words and sentences in his poetry reflects the high ancient style and pure and simple emotions. The latter is more manifested in his modern poetry, which is characterized by clear and beautiful diction, clear images, and rich and appropriate allusions. The formation of Xia Jingguan’s poetic style in the late Qing Dynasty is the result of various functions.First of all,his teacher’s teachings and the cultivation of official and aristocratic families have all promoted his character to be peaceful and upright. Therefore, his poetry is elegant, upright and clear in style.Secondly, communication with older poets and peer poets has also broadened his horizons. At the same time, the political environment in which he lived also affected his attitude towards poetry creation, which was neither pandering nor flattering.Although he was a petty official,he should not be ignored.Xia Jingguan,as a poet of Tongguang style in the Guangxuan dynasty, was also known as a poet and scholar. He interacted with many famous poets such as Zheng Xiaoxu,Cheng Sanli, and Shen Zengzhi, who are representatives of Tongguang style poets. At the same time,he communicated with other poets and celebrities in the poetry circle. His poems were praised by others and were already famous in the Qing Dynasty.Poets of the same generation and later generations have highly praised him, such as Shen Zengzhi, the representative of Tongguang style poets, praised his poetry for its clarity.Later generations of poets called his poetry "expanding the country through poetry".Scholars in recent times praised his poetry for its profound poetry, which combines the characteristics of Tang and Song poetry. These reflect his outstanding poetry creation in the late Qing Dynasty.Xia Jingguan was listed in Wang Bijiang’s "Records of Guangxuan’s Poetic Circles",Qian Zhonglian’s "Records of Poetic Circles in the Recent Hundred Years",and Zhang Shizhao’s "On the Forty Poets of Modern Times".It can also be seen that Xia Jingguan is very outstanding and unique in the late Qing poetry circles.
