The book Empires to Be Remembered is a historical text that focuses on the history of empires from the ancient times to the present day.It covers nearly all regions and continents of the world,providing a truly global perspective on the history of empires.It is a historical text that explores the similarities and differences in the development of various empires.By comparing the rise and fall of these empires,historians have identified patterns and historical lessons that can guide modern state governance.This translation report focuses on the first chapter of Empires to Be Remembered and examines the strategy of explicitation in historical texts.This translation report takes the first chapter of the book Empires to Be Remembered as an example to explore the strategy of explicitation translation in historical texts.As a historical text,there are some linguistic characteristics.Firstly,the text contains a large number of historical backgrounds,historical figures,various metaphors,and allusions.Secondly,there are many long and complex sentences.Thirdly,the information conveyed by the book is accurate and coherent.By reading a large number of translations of historical texts,the authors found that there are cases of missing historical backgrounds and unclear semantics,resulting in inaccurate or misunderstood translations.In response to these translation problems,the translator adopts the explicitation theory in the translation process.This translation report uses Claudy’s explicitation classification as a framework to analyze the reasons for the occurrence of explicitation in translations and to classify the explicitation strategies used in translations.This report adopts Claudy’s explicitation classification and classifies the case studies into three categories: obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,and pragmatic explicitation.Each of these categories uses a corresponding translation strategy: obligatory explicitation uses the strategy of reorganization and amplification;optional explicitation uses the strategy of conversion and amplification;and pragmatic explicitation uses the strategy of adding footnotes and in-text explanations.The research shows that explicitation strategies improve translation quality,enhance coherence and readability of the translation,and overcome linguistic and cultural differences,thus achieving the goal of bringing readers closer to the work.
