| The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017) places greater emphasis on developing students’ "question awareness".The importance of questions in English language learning cannot be overstated.Questions are needed to stimulate active thinking and to help extract background knowledge.Students are inspired by the teacher’s series of questions to solve questions in order to gain a deeper understanding of the reading material and the logic behind it.Questions become an important tool for students’ learning.Therefore,it is necessary to apply the question chains model in high school English reading teaching.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the "question chains" teaching model on students’ interest in English reading,their English reading performance,and their ability to read in English in a qualitative manner.The research questions are:(1)What are the effects of the question chains teaching model on high school students’ interest in English reading?(2)What are the effects of the "question chains" teaching model on students’thinking quality?(3)What are the effects of the "question chains" teaching model on high school students’ English reading performance?The author selected a total of 100 students from senior Class 1 and Class 2 of a high school in Panjin,Liaoning Province,for the study.Class 1 was used as the experimental class(EC)while Class 2 was used as the control class(CC).The instruments used in the study included pre-tests and post-tests,questionnaires and interviews,and the data were compared and analyzed by Excel 2007 and SPSS 24.0.The results of the study show that,firstly,the application of the "question chains"teaching model in the high school English reading classroom is feasible,it increased students’interest in English reading.Secondly,the application of the "question chains" teaching model can develop students’ English reading thinking qualities and promote their logical,critical and creative thinking.Thirdly,the application of the "question chains" teaching model in high school English reading teaching can improve students’ English reading performance.This study has practical implications for the teaching of English reading in high schools,and demonstrates that the question chains teaching model can active students’ learning initiative,exploring the mysteries of reading in a series of questions,promoting the development of students’ thinking skills.However,the implementation effect was affected to some extent by the experimental time and the actual operating environment.Therefore,the authors hope that these problems can be corrected and improved in future related studies. |
