Sericulture and Silk Culture of China is a national first-class undergraduate course produced by Zhejiang University, which is broadcasted on the MOOC platform of Chinese universities.Focusing on sericulture and silk, this course comprehensively introduces the history and culture of Chinese silk, weaving techniques and production technologies, the formation and contemporary relevance of the Silk Road, the relationship among modern silk industry, silk clothing and a better life. The course is chosen as a material for Chinese to English consecutive interpreting, not only to popularize the knowledge of mulberry and silk,so that audiences around the world can feel the unique charm of Chinese silk culture, but also to help spread China’s excellent traditional culture and expand the global influence of Chinese silk culture. There are three main problems in this practice of Chinese to English consecutive interpreting, namely, obstacles in listening and analyzing of the source language, improper note-taking,and difficulties in outputting the target language. It is these problems that cause disfluencies in the interpreter’s delivery.Avoiding disfluencies in the process of interpretation is conducive to improving the quality of interpretation and increasing the accuracy of information transmission.Based on the simulated interpretation practice, coping strategies are proposed to solve these problems. To overcome the obstacles in listening and analyzing of the source language, the interpreter should infer the source language information by better comprehension of the context and accumulate sufficient background knowledge;to address improper note-taking,the interpreter should clarify the meaning of note symbols and scientifically allocate the efforts in note-taking and memorizing;to resolve the difficulties in outputting the target language, the interpreter should paraphrase expressions with Chinese characteristics and using reasonable interpretation strategies. The reasons and coping strategies for disfluencies in the process of interpretation above are not limited to this simulated consecutive interpretation practice. It is hoped that the problem analysis and coping strategies in this thesis can provide some reference for learners who encounter similar difficulties and help them improve fluency in their interpreting.
