Homework is a supplement and extension of English classroom teaching,and also an essential way to help students consolidate what they have learned in class.Effective homework is of significance for teachers to understand the classroom teaching and timely adjust the teaching methods to improve the teaching efficiency.However,at present,there is too much homework at school making students overloaded.Therefore,the Ministry of Education issued the Double Reduction Policy in 2021,requiring the quality of homework to be improved for its vital role of teaching diagnosis,learning consolidation and learner analysis.Design of homework is required to be included in the school-based teaching and research.Based on this,this thesis focuses on the design and implementation of English homework in junior high school and intends to solve the following three problems:1)What are the problems of English homework design and implementation in junior high school?2)What cause the problems of English homework design and implementation in junior high school?3)What kind of countermeasures should be taken to solve the problems of English homework design and implementation in junior high school?This thesis reviews the relevant studies at home and abroad.Based on the theories of Multiple Intelligence,Zone of Proximal Development and Input Hypothesis,it tries to get the current situation of English homework design and implementation in junior high school to propose optimized instructions through questionnaire,interview and case analysis.First,the questionnaire is distributed to students from Class 4 and Class 6 in Grade 8 in a junior high school of Guian District,Guiyang City.These are the two classes that the researcher is required to manage in her internship.There are 49 students in Class 4 and 46 students in Class 6,with a total of 95 students.Then,five English teachers from Grade 7 to Grade 9 are selected for interviews.Among them,there are three Grade-Eight English teachers,one Grade-Seven teacher and one Grade-Nine teacher.Finally,homework samples from a total of 40 English assignments are selected for analysis,modification,optimization and implementation.The results show that there are problems of English homework design and implementation in junior high school.For example,types of English homework are single;the quality of English homework is not high and the quantity lacks reasonable planning;homework design ignores a holistic perspective.The causes of these problems could be that there is a lack of holistic instructional planning,teachers have limited time and energy and classroom teaching is bound with the exam-oriented education.The study finds that it is significant to establish a correct teaching view and clarify the purpose of homework;homework should be suitable and appropriate and combined with the ZPD;homework should establish the link between the classroom and the real life so that students can be more motivated to do homework and at the same time homework should be designed to satisfy students’ needs at different levels.
