Art Tatum’s Right Hand Improvisation

This paper studies the characteristics of right hand improvisation in jazz piano solo,improvisation is the main part of jazz,and piano right hand improvisation is the main form.Art Tatum is one of the most legendary pianists in the history of American jazz music.He is a representative musician of the swing period.Art’s improvisation has a very distinct listening atmosphere,and his music has a deep influence on the post-era musicians and later generations.The thesis of this paper is the characteristics of the right-hand improvisation for the inspiration and application of jazz piano.Around the thesis of this paper,The author takes Art Tatum’s characteristics of the right hand voice in the 《Body And Soul》 repertoire as an example to discuss how to use it in practical performance.This article is divided into three chapters:The first chapter summarizes Art Tatum’s musical style with the characteristics of other jazz piano masters;Chapter second chapter analyzes the characteristics of 《Body And Soul》 right hand improvisation,focusing on the control of Art’s change of tone,thirty-second notes of the right hand,combined five tone scale and the rhythm changes of the whole track;the third chapter integrates the inductive three points into the practical application of the improvisation in the concert.
