The purpose of this study is to investigate the motivation of undergraduate students in Chinese language learning and to provide effective suggestions for Chinese language teaching based on the findings.According to the principle of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,students are the main body of the teaching process,and teachers’ “teaching” should serve students’ “learning”,and effective teaching is inseparable from the analysis of students’ learning motivation.Teachers who understand students’ learning motivation can improve their teaching strategies,conduct more targeted teaching,and improve teaching quality;meanwhile,students who understand their own learning motivation will further understand and analyze their own learning behaviors and choose more suitable learning strategies to improve their learning efficiency.This study mainly uses questionnaires,interviews and data analysis to analyze and interpret international students’ motivation to learn Chinese.A questionnaire was administered to 84 international students in the School of International Education of T University,and the main variables such as motivation intensity,motivation type and factors affecting motivation were collected and analyzed.On this basis,the study was supplemented by interviews to further understand the changes of international students’ learning emotions and attitudes in the process of learning Chinese,analyze the inner psychological characteristics that affect students’ learning behaviors,and investigate the reasons for the changes of students’ learning motivation.It was found that the type of motivation was significantly correlated with the age and length of study of international students;the intrinsic interest motivation had the greatest influence on the intensity of motivation,and there was a strong connection between all types of motivation;the teacher’s personality was a key factor affecting the intensity of motivation;and the internal drive for self-improvement had a significant positive correlation with the attractiveness of Chinese language.The ultimate purpose of studying international students’ motivation is to provide useful suggestions for Chinese language teaching,i.e.to provide effective teaching strategies for teachers,appropriate learning strategies for international students and useful references for teaching management.This study suggests that Chinese language teachers should stimulate international students’ intrinsic interest in learning Chinese;help students set clear learning goals;choose appropriate teaching materials to improve teaching efficiency;and improve their own personality and teaching ability.Undergraduate international students should develop cultural sensitivity,improve their cultural adaptation ability,and use multiple learning platforms to improve their learning efficiency.Schools should strengthen the training of teaching staff in teaching management;and promote the exchange between Chinese and foreign students.Besides,this study also expects to promote the future flourishing of Chinese language teaching by studying and analyzing the learning motivation of international students.
