The employee handbook is a type of the applied text, occupying the largest share in the translation market. However, traditional manual translation fails to satisfy the huge translation demands due to its relatively lower efficiency compared with the developing technology-aided translation, which has brought tremendous changes to the translation environment. Therefore, there is an urgent demand to explore how to make the machine assist translation effectively. In an effort to provide post-editors with experience in achieving high-quality translation more efficiently, the report analyzes the Google English and the edited versions of Employee Handbook in “three dimensions” under the guidance of “Eco-translatology”promoted by Hu Gengshen. The report focuses on the problem classifications and modifications of machine translation in the linguistic and communicative dimensions.First, the linguistic problems involve words, sentences and logic because of the different linguistic environments of Chinese and English language. Those errors should be corrected through post-editing to convey appropriate information and adapt to the semantic equivalence of the linguistic dimension as the basic role of informative texts.Second, the communication purpose of the translation requires adjustments in the communicative dimension like improper modal verbs, oral expressions, emotional deficiency, pragmatic limitations and communication failures, achieving the pragmatic equivalence of the translation. This report is expected to provide a new way and perspective for translation practice with the post-editing of linguistic and communicative dimensions under the guidance of Ecotranslatology.
