An Investigation Of Bakhtin’s Theory Of Chronotope And Its Application

In Bakhtin’s novel theory,the theory of chronotope is not only one of the three theoretical pillars alongside the theory of carnivalization and polyphony,but it is actually the basis for the theories of the latter two,and the premise on which their core concept of "outsideness" is founded.The theory of chronotope is the key bridge in the chain of Bakhtin’s important theoretical ideas of "chronotope-outsideness-dialoguecarnivalization-polyphony".Only by analyzing the theory of chronotope from a holistic perspective,examing its close connection with Bakhtin’s philosophical and other poetic thoughts,exploring its morphological conversion and practical applications in Bakhtin’s ideology,can we truly reveal its academic value and significance.The paper consists of an introduction,three chapters,and a conclusion.The introduction analyzes the background of the paper,reviews the current research on the theory of chronotope at home and abroad,and proposes the necessity and possibility of its holistic examination.The first chapter outlines Bakhtin’s space-time philosophy and the theory of chronotope,examines the philosophical origins of the chronotope and its relation with the idea of "outsideness",pointing out the conversion of Bakhtin’s chronotopic thoughts.Chapter two focuses on the application and influence of chronotopes in Bakhtin’s novel theories,taking Bakhtin’s discussion of the works of Rabelais,Dostoevsky and Cervantes as examples,analyzes the close relationship between the theory of chronotope,carnivalization and polyphony.The last chapter emphasizes the fundamental role of chronotope in Bakhtin’s novel theories,points out its key bridge position between Bakhtin’s theoretical ideas,and summarizes the academic value of chronotope in his thought system;then,by taking the application of chronotpes in the fields such as narratology and filmic art,the chapter looks ahead to the application values of chronotopes in literary studies and cultural studies.
