A Report On The Translation:30 Years Of The Dissolution Of The Soviet Union And A Warnings Brought To Vietnam From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

On the occasion of the 30 th anniversary of the disintegration of the Soviet Union,the Vietnam People’s Army electronic newspaper published a commentary article entitled 30 Years of the Disintegration of the Soviet Union and the Warnings Brought to Vietnam.This article is a comprehensive and systematic reflection of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the government theorists on the events of the “disintegration of the Soviet Union”,and to a certain extent it reflects the position and coping strategies of the Communist Party of Vietnam,in order to be a warning for themselves and avoid same mistakes.Since this text has certain reference value for China’s study of the Disintegration of the Soviet Union,Party building work and ruling philosophy of the Communist Party of Vietnam,the translator chose this text for this translation practice.Eugene A.Nida’s translation theory holds that the translation should achieve functional reciprocity between the translated text and the original text in four aspects: words,sentences,texts,and styles.Among them,the most important thing is the reciprocity of meaning,followed by the reciprocity of form,with clear semantic directivity.The source text is a political argumentative essay,which is quite persuasive and speculative,and requires rigorous and precise words,clear logic,and well-architected structure.In the translation of a political argumentative essay,the central task of translation is expressing the core theme of the essay,and preserving the style of the political argumentative essay of the source text is also a basic requirement,which is consistent with requirement of functional reciprocity theory accurately conveying the meaning of the original text and retaining the style of the original text.Therefore,the translator chose to translate the essay with the guide of functional equivalence theory.In the process of translation practice with functional reciprocity theory,the translator found that naturalization as the main translation strategy can fully convey the core theme of the original text while preserving the original style.At the vocabulary level,the literal translation method and the paraphrasing method are mainly used to complete the translation of nouns,verbs and ChineseVietnamese words;Metaphors are used to translate terms,idioms,etc.For words with obvious political overtones,the hermeneutics method is the mainstay.The translator tried to accurately express the semantic while retaining the original political style;For word groups and phrases,it is necessary to study the occasions of their usage,and accurately express their semantics in combination with the sentence meaning and network interpretation.At the sentence level,the translator mainly used the additive translation method and the provincial translation method to deal with sentences that lack components;Used the provincial translation method and the deciphering method to deal with sentences with more modifiable components;Used hermeneutics to deal with long sentences that contain explanatory elements;Used ingredient conversion to deal with sentences that do not conform to Chinese expression habits.At the chapter level,the translator used additional conjunctions or sentence components to deal with the coherence of the text and used methods such as adjusting word order to accurately express the logic of the content of the chapter.In addition,the translator also found that the reciprocity of the word meaning is both a difficult point and a core.The reciprocity of the word meaning can achieve the reciprocity of the sentence,and the reciprocity of the sentence can achieve the reciprocity of the chapters,and then achieve stylistic reciprocity.Therefore,the realization of the equivalence of the meaning of the word is the basis for achieving functional equivalence.When stylistic reciprocity is achieved,we can see that the functional reciprocity theory as the guide to translate the political argumentative essay can better achieve the purpose of conveying the meaning of the original text and retaining the stylistic style.
