| This report is based on the author’s participation in a field interpretation practice for an equipment installation project. The stages of the project can be divided into equipment installation and equipment commissioning. With terms relating extruder and its utility systems from Coperion, the interpretation practice is highly professional. The information related to mechanical engineering, quality assurance, civil construction, and other areas is included in the installation stage, whereas the parameter settings, operational settings, and equipment communication data are included in the commissioning stage.Senior interpreters generally rely on their prior professional knowledge and work experience to acquire information in the source language and carry out field interpreting for such professionally demanding tasks. While the student interpreters lack the relevant knowledge and experience, making interpretation projects more difficult and challenging. After reading a great amount of literature, the author recognized the value of extralinguistic knowledge in the interpreting process and further acknowledged the issue of extra-linguistic knowledge insufficiency in practice, making an effort to investigate the implications of ELK insufficiency on the quality of field interpreting.Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the author analyzed and annotated the corpus of the two stages. The study’s findings demonstrate that the implications of ELK insufficiency on field interpreting include misinterpretation, information loss, improper pauses, and self-correction from the perspective of interpretation fidelity and fluency. In this regard, the author proposes strategies to solve the problem accordingly, including extensively accumulating encyclopedic knowledge, actively acquiring contextual knowledge, learning professional knowledge, improving listening comprehension and short-term memory, and enhancing the ability of flexibility.Through the clients’ evaluation of the author’s pre-practice and post-practice,and the comparison graph of interpreting quality in the two stages,it is found that the number of misinterpretations and information loss decreases significantly with the continuous accumulation of ELK.The findings indicate that the coping strategies could successfully assist the author in resolving the issue caused by ELK insufficiency and improving the field interpreting quality. |
