| Qian Zhonglian(1908-2003),originally named E Sun but later used the pen name Mengtiao,was a native of Changshu,Jiangsu Province.Mr.Qian devoted himself to the study of classical Chinese literature,with a particularly deep understanding of Qing dynasty poetry.He was recognized for his expertise in this field,and was even called "Tianshouxing Hunjianglong Li Jun" by Hu Wenhui in his book Point to the modern learning forest.In recent years,there has been increasing attention paid to Mr.Qian’s work in academic circles,but there is still a need for more in-depth and meticulous research.Therefore,this article mainly focuses on Mr.Qian’s research on Qing dynasty poetry,analyzing it from four aspects:academic background,theoretical summary,poetry selection and evaluation,and annotation of poetry collections.Chapter 1 discusses the academic background of Qian Zhonglian’s research on Qing poetry,focusing on his student years,poet years,and scholar years.During his student years,Mr.Qian immersed himself in traditional studies and studied extensively in various fields such as history,philosophy,and literature.In his poet years,Mr.Qian expanded his social circle and became more attentive to current events and social issues.During his scholar years,Mr.Qian tirelessly wrote and produced many works that made significant contributions to the study of Qing poetry.Chapter 2 summarizes Qian Zhonglian’s theoretical perspectives on Qing poetry based on his essays and discussions on poetry.The chapter analyzes his writings in The Essays of Qian Zhonglian and other works,exploring his accurate understanding and insightful evaluation of Qing poetry from the perspectives of poetry value and schools of poetry.The chapter also focuses on Mr.Qian’s early work Qian Zhonglian’s Remarks on Poets and Poetry which evaluates Qing poetry from the perspectives of content and art and emphasizes its importance in understanding the poetic history and innovative functions of Qing poetry.Chapter 3 evaluates Qian Zhonglian’s selection of Qing poets and poems,which provided a more diverse and comprehensive framework for evaluating the works of Qing poets.The chapter analyzes Mr.Qian’s distinctive style of literary criticism revealed in his"Dian Jiangluo" and evaluates the representative poets featured in his selection.The chapter also examines Selected Poems of Contemporary Chinese Poets which was edited by Mr.Qian,and explores its selection methodology and poetic traditions.The anthology was notable for its criterion of poetic individuality,the inclusion of multiple poetic schools,and its adoption of various poetic styles.Chapter 4 focuses on Qian Zhonglian’s work in compiling and annotating poetry collections,which was a significant achievement in his work on literary collections.The chapter first reviews Mr.Qian’s work on Qing poetry annotations before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.It then analyzes Mr.Qian’s The Annotation on Huang Zunxian’s Anthology of Poetry highlighting his unique annotation style and his methods of exploring the relationship between poetic history and annotation.Finally,the chapter explores Mr.Qian’s views on Qing poetry,which are scattered throughout his annotations in The Collation and Annotation on Shen Zengzhi’s Collections showcasing his vast and complementary academic expertise. |
