A Report On The E-C Translation Of Achieving Our Common Humanity:Celebrating Global Cooperation Through The United Nations(Excerpts)

The author’s translation material is selected from the UN publication Achieving Our Common Humanity:Celebrating Global Cooperation Through the United Nations.The selected part covers many themes such as sustainable development,UN peacekeeping,disaster risks and racism.In addition to some general features of UN documents such as conciseness,accuracy and objectiveness,this UN publication is special because a great number of posters,flow charts,photos,statistics and tables are included which can clearly show the UN’s actions.The theoretical basis of this report is Peter Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation.This report focuses on how to deliver accurate,fluent and readable translation.Semantic translation is objective which stresses accuracy,while communicative translation is subjective which highlights the response of target readers.Since UN documents translation should ensure accuracy and fluency,it is necessary to adopt semantic and communicative translation together.This report firstly introduces the background of the project,the characteristic of the selected text and its theoretical basis.Then translation processes which can be divided into pre-translation,while-translation and after-translation are introduced.In addition to that,problems encountered in these processes are listed.In the case study,many examples are provided at the lexical,syntactical and discourse level.In order to deliver accurate and readable translation at the lexical and syntactical level,translation techniques such as diction,conversion,addition and division are adopted.In order to achieve cohesion at the discourse level,implicit logic should be explicitly delivered;to achieve coherence,clues from situational context and co-text should be paid enough attention to.In the end,the author believes that accuracy,faithfulness and smoothness should be criteria for UN documents translation.
