Coping Strategies For Turn-taking Difficulties In Business Meeting Interpreting

The development of globalization has spawned a large number of Sino-foreign joint ventures,which has increased the demand for business conference interpreting.In essence,business conference interpreting is a special conversation process involving three parties,which is also a turn-taking activity.There may be some turn-taking problems in turn-taking,such as silence,conflict and overlapping turn that the main communicators may not be able to adjust by themselves due to language and cultural differences.These problems affect the whole communication process,which requires the interpreter to play the role of coordinator and make rational use of certain turntaking strategies.This report is based on the author’s practice of business conference interpretating in a biotechnology company.In practice,the author encountered many turn-taking problems,which had a great impact on her interpreting quality and the whole communication process.To solves such problems,this thesis takes the recording-tocorpus of business conference interpreting participated by the author as the research object,takes the turn-taking problem on spot as the starting point,and discusses the turn-taking strategies that interpreters can exercise in business conference interpreting through data analysis and quantitative research based on the discourse-based communicative paradigm and turn-taking related theories.Through the analysis,the author finds that in addition to transmitting information,the interpreter should be able to understand various discourse strategies in communication,master the necessary knowledge of turn-taking,and actively participate in communication activities through his accumulated practical experience in interpreting and analysis of specific discourse situations,so as to manage turns reasonably in two language systems,such as interrupting long turns and overlapping turns,breaking the silence and ending binary sequences by creating turns,and ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the received information by returning turns,so that the conversation can advance smoothly.By observing the characteristics of turn-taking in business conference interpreting attended by the author,this paper summarizes the problems encountered by the author and puts forward corresponding countermeasures,which provides data support for the interpreting research from the perspective of turn-taking and useful advice for aspiring interpreters in business conference interpreting.
