Cultural Images Translation

Online NBA reviews are popular among Chinese readers.The translator received the task of translation from English to Chinese on the website Hupu.Cultural images in text are generally carried by words which contain specific culture and present the images to readers.In this task,it is found that cultural images are relatively typical in such text,and there are many factors to concern.Therefore,the translation of cultural images is specially studied.The cultural images in this translation task can be divided into relevant cultural images,partially relevant cultural images and irrelevant cultural images in English and Chinese.In the process of translating cultural images,it is found that there are translation techniques of retention,substitution,addition and reduction to be adopted.When translating relevant cultural images,retention is majorly used.Reduction is applied for brevity.Substitution is adopted because better expressions in Chinese can be found.For partially relevant cultural images translation,addition or retention is used for NBA cultural images to retain the original cultural images,substitution is used for non-NBA cultural images to give up the original cultural images.For irrelevant cultural images translation,addition is for sports cultural images,substitution is for non-sports cultural images.Retention and reduction are not applied.This report is intended to provide reference for the translation of cultural images in sports text and other related text.
