| English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)clearly sets cultural awareness as one of the key competencies of English subject.The conception of cultural awareness is not only defined both as the understanding of Chinese culture and foreign cultures,but also refer to the appreciation of excellent cultures.It reveals the cross-cultural cognition,attitude and behavior choice of students in the new era.Cultivating students’ cultural awareness is an important task in English reading teaching,and teachers’ cultural awareness teaching goals and teaching methods play a vital role in it.Cultivating students’ cultural awareness is an important task in English reading teaching,in which teachers’ cultural awareness teaching objectives and teaching methods play a crucial role.However,in the research on the cultivation of cultural awareness in English reading class,few scholars take the teaching goal of cultural awareness as their research focus.Therefore,this paper attempts to bring together both the cultural awareness teaching objectives and the cultural teaching methods of teachers in English reading teaching and tries to answer the following two research questions:(1)What cultural teaching methods do junior high school English teachers use to achieve their established cultural awareness teaching objectives? Are they consistent with each other?(2)What are the factors that influence junior high school English teachers to achieve cultural awareness teaching objectives in English reading teaching?The research instruments used in this study are classroom observation,questionnaire survey and interview.After observing and transcribing 20 junior high school English reading classes,the author analyzes the situation of teachers’ cultural awareness cultivation in their classroom according to the classification of cultural awareness in the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022),and obtains the current situation of teachers’ cultural awareness teaching goal design and teaching methods in junior high school English reading teaching.Secondly,the author make a survey of 130 junior high school English teachers in Nanning by means of a questionnaire,and analyzed the collected data through SPSS26.0.After that,in order to supplement the questionnaire data analysis and further understand the in-depth information about the influencing factors,the author selected five English teachers for interviews.Based on the research data collection and analysis and discussion,the research results are as follows:(1)There is indeed a discrepancy between the cultural teaching objectives and the teaching methods of junior high school English teachers.Teachers have a clear and correct understanding of the importance and necessity of cultural teaching,and have a relatively good understanding of the ability to cultivate cultural awareness required by the New Curriculum Standard of Compulsory Education in2022,and hope that the education administration concerned can provide platforms and channels to help teachers improve cultural teaching literacy.(2)The actual implementation of culture teaching in classroom has poor results,which is mainly due to the following subjective and objective reasons.First of all,the pressure of the college entrance examination is high,and the teaching time for the cultivation of cultural awareness is not enough,and the importance of culture teaching is not fully recognized.At present,there is a general phenomenon that cultural teaching is less important than language teaching,and the proportion of culture teaching to language teaching design is relatively small.Secondly,there is a lack of both the systematic and authoritative cultural teaching materials and the evaluation models.The school has failed to provide rich teaching resources,resulting in greater randomness of cultural teaching content.In addition,factors such as teachers’ lack of cultural literacy and students’ insufficient cultural cognition result in the problems of incomplete cultural teaching objectives and the inappropriate teaching methods.Based on the above research results,in order to better cultivate students’ cultural awareness in English reading class,the author provides some suggestions:(1)to enrich the concept of English classroom teaching and integrate cultural teaching and language teaching organically.(2)to expand cultural resources creatively and enrich cultural teaching content.(3)to enhance teachers’ cultural teaching quality and adopt appropriate cultural teaching methods.(4)When cultivating students’ cultural awareness,teachers should avoid being deeply involved with examination-oriented teaching. |
