Cognitive Research On Code-switching Of Presuppositional Phenomena In International Publicity Texts

Martin and Carl refer to the fact presupposition elicited by triggers such as “know” and“regret”,as well as the common information possessed by the participants of conversation as presuppositional phenomena.Based on this,the thesis holds that all phenomena related to presupposition can be called presuppositional phenomena.In addition to the above information,presuppositional phenomena also include the classification of presupposition,such as cultural presupposition.As an important international publicity text,Report to the20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China is rich in connotation and provides an excellent platform for the world to understand China.There are many expressions that present culture with Chinese characteristics in the report.Such special expressions are the shared knowledge acquired by Chinese people under the common cultural background,which coincides with the cultural presupposition in the presuppositional phenomena.At present,many scholars have conducted multi-perspective research on international publicity texts and achieved fruitful results.However,little attention has been paid to the exploration of the presuppositional phenomena in international publicity text as Report to the 20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China.Therefore,the thesis will analyze the presuppositional phenomena in the report,mainly cultural presupposition.In addition,the dissemination of information to countries around the world is inseparable from the empowerment of translation.The thesis regards translator’s translation activity as a cognitive code-switching process.The translator who acts as the cognitive subject decodes and encodes the presuppositional phenomena through cognitive processing.In other words,it is the cognitive processing of the cognitive subject that enables the presuppositional phenomena in the text to be recognized by the target language readers in a more effective way.By combing linguistic theories,it is found that the three research paths of cognitive linguistics can effectively explain the source language translator’s code-switching process.Furthermore,English,as one of the international common languages,has the largest audience.Therefore,the thesis selects the Chinese-English version of Report to the 20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China to analyze the English translation strategies used by the source language translator,and probes into the cognitive motivation of the translator in the process of code-switching.The thesis takes the Chinese-English version of Report to the 20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China issued by the Information Office of the State Council(http://english.scio.gov.cn/20thcpccongress/2022-10/26/content＿78486016.html)as corpus,relies on the grounded analysis program to process the corpus and describe the specific types of presuppositional phenomena in the report.Limited to space,the thesis focuses on cultural presupposition in presuppositional phenomena,and then analyzes the cognitive motivations of the source language translator in the code-switching of cultural presupposition.The study draws the following three conclusions:Firstly,in Report to the 20 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,there are abundant presuppositional phenomena,such as fact presupposition,belief presupposition and cultural presupposition.Fact presupposition and belief presupposition are reflected in 9out of 13 presupposition triggers.Through research,it is found that the cultural presupposition in Report to the 20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China includes political culture presupposition,folk culture presupposition,literary culture presupposition and national spirit culture presupposition.Secondly,in the Chinese-English code-switching of Report to the 20 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,the code-switching strategies adopted by the source language translators for cultural presupposition are mainly literal translation and liberal translation,and the liberal translation is mainly presented by amplification.Thirdly,the source language translator’s code-switching of cultural presupposition can be well explained by three views of cognitive linguistics.Under the experiential view,the translator adopts literal translation when the source language and the target language readers have a common cognitive category or have the same metaphorical and metonymic thinking.When the source language and the target language readers’ cognitive categories or metonymic thinking are inconsistent,the translator conveys the core meaning through liberal translation.In the prominence view,if the target language and the source language highlight different parts in language structure,amplification is selected to highlight different focuses in language structure.From the perspective of attentional view,if the source language and the target language readers have different cognitive frames and perspectives,the translator chooses amplification to make the presupposition information explicit.With Report to the 20 th National Congress of Communist Party of China as corpus,the thesis explores the presuppositional phenomena in the publicity text,mainly the cultural presupposition and the cognitive motivation of code-switching of English translation,hoping to enrich the research on the English translation of cultural presupposition in international publicity text and provide complementary interpretation for the analysis of code-switching of the publicity text.At the same time,it enriches the perspective of presupposition research and promotes the localization of presupposition research.
