Saints Formulate The Rule Of Objects And Artisans Manufacture Artifacts From The Perspective Of The Book Of Rites

The Book of Rites has always been an extremely important book of etiquette,encompassing both complex etiquette systems and a large number of records reflecting the artifacts under the etiquette system.This article takes "The Book of Rites" as the research object.Due to the diverse design ideas contained in this literature,a new approach is taken,and designers are chosen as the entry point.Reading through the classics,it can be found that both the sage and the hundred workers are important creators in the ritual system,and they have different responsibilities in the creation system.Therefore,this article strives to summarize the ideological concepts of the sages and the hundred workers in their respective systems,and then comprehensively examine and extract the design ideas from them,and borrow from the past to the present to explore their impact on modern design.Firstly,this article analyzes the cultural and contemporary environment of the documents in the Book of Rites,and explores the concept of artifacts involved,thereby demonstrating that design and ritual systems complement and achieve each other.Furthermore,it is proposed that the sage plays the role of "regulating objects" in the creation activities.He formulates temporal norms,category norms,and display norms for objects based on the laws between natural heaven and earth,and has developed the design principles of "timing based on category",the design methods of "comparing objects to ugliness",and the design methods of "each department’s own bureau".In addition,Baigong plays the role of "making utensils" in the creation activities.Making utensils is the expression of Baigong’s skills,compliance with the law,and level.In the process of making utensils,craftsmen aim to "do not engage in lewd craftsmanship,and strive for excellence".The result of making utensils is an assessment of Baigong’s "sincerity" character.It is worth noting that through the study of the behavior of the sage and the hundred laborers in the Book of Rites,it is believed that they serve different responsibilities as independent individuals,but there are still subtle connections within their independence.The sage and the hundred craftsmen in the process of creation reflect the idea of "planning for things" in the creation process.The considerations here mainly include moral strategy and artistic strategy,which exhibit a clear order relationship.Of course,in the entire etiquette system,order itself is the most typical characteristic.Therefore,an orderly network of relationships has been formed between "sages,virtues,craftsmanship","laws,arts,and tools","craftsmanship,techniques,and tools",and "sages,images,and laws".These major elements are interconnected,forming a "field" shaped network of creation order.In addition,the design ideas conveyed in the Book of Rites have brought significant inspiration to the arrangement of designers,the regulation of design activities,and the professional ethics of design.Based on the literature,the concept of ’sage’s rules and objects and hundred workpieces’ is a development of the ancient method of creating objects,which is called’ observation tools’.The research thinking used in the process of confirming the concept of ’ritual as a table tool’ provides a new model for studying object design.
