| As an extremely important resource on Earth,air plays an essential role for the vast majority of creatures.In recent years,air pollution issues such as greenhouse gas emissions,smog and haze phenomenon have affected more and more people.Analysis of the ecological discourse of air pollution control in China can help to better understand the air pollution problem in China and take corresponding countermeasures.However,research on the ecological discourse of air pollution control is still relatively rare.This study analyzes the attitude resources in 18 pieces of Chinese air pollution control news selected from China Daily based on the attitude system in Appraisal Theory.With the help of UAM Corpus Tool,the research method combining qualitative and quantitative analysis is used to analyze the statistics drawn from the UAM Corpus Tool so as to describe the distribution,employment and ecological functions of attitude resources in the selected news reports.The study aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the distribution and employment of attitude resources in China Daily’s news reports on air pollution control in China?(2)What are the ecological functions of the attitude resources in China Daily’s news reports on air pollution control in China?Through the analysis,the main findings of the research are as follows.In terms of the distribution and employment of attitude resources,it can be found that the total number of the attitude resources is 212.Among all the annotated attitude resources,judgment resources account for the largest proportion,appreciation resources account for the second,while affect resources account for the least,with judgment resources accounting for 40.6%,appreciation resources accounting for34.4%,and affect resources accounting for 25% of the total number of attitude resources.The reporters use attitude resources to present the status of air pollution control in China and predictions and expectations for the future air pollution control,in the meanwhile,the impacts of air pollution,and measures to deal with the air pollution issue are also put forward from various aspects.In terms of ecological functions,attitude resources serve to better convey meaning and draw readers’ attention to the phenomenon of air pollution in China so as to properly understand the problem.These attitude resources in the selected reports perform three main ecological functions,namely,revealing the status of air pollution control in China;conveying positive ecological ideologies;implying relationship between society and ecological discourse. |
