With the promulgation of the Overall Framework for Developing Students’key competencies in China,China’s basic education has officially entered a new era of comprehensively developing students’ key competencies.It is clearly pointed out in English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition)that the cultivation of English key competencies should include the cultivation of students’ thinking quality,and critical thinking,as an important component of students’ thinking quality,has attracted the attention and research of experts,scholars,and front-line teachers.Taking English(reading)teachers in Tongliao W High School as the research object,this study collected master data through questionnaires and interviews to explore the cultivation of cognitive sub-abilities of critical thinking(interpretation,analysis,assessment,inference,explanation and self-regulation)in high school English reading teaching,and specifically answered the following three research questions:(1)What is the status quo of teachers’cultivation of students’ critical thinking in high school English reading teaching?(2)What teaching activities do teachers adopt to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability in high school English reading teaching?(3)How to promote the cultivation of students’ critical thinking in senior high school English reading teaching?Through data analysis and induction,it is found that the cultivation of critical thinking ability in high school English reading teaching is general.English teachers mainly carry out reading classroom teaching to cultivate critical thinking ability through the steps of lead-up and pre-reading activities,comprehension of articles in reading,thinking,and evaluation after reading,and integrating the cultivation of interpretation,analysis,inference,and explanation abilities into reading teaching.Based on the above findings,this paper puts forward suggestions from the aspects of curriculum resource optimization,classroom teaching strategies,and teachers’ personal career growth.
