According to the senior high school English curriculum standard(2017 Edition,2020Revision),extensive reading can make students understand more about the rich text content and genre,and further make them gradually develop good reading habits.Students can develop their reading ability through reading,and learn language,science and humanities.Through reading,teachers can expand students’ thinking and improve their ability of aesthetic,appreciation and evaluation.At the same time,the standard also points out that teachers should develop the English subject core literacy through teaching,so as to achieve the fundamental task of moral education.Among them,the development of thinking qualty helps to improve students’ ability to analyze and solve problems,so that they can observe and understand the world in a cross-cultural perspective,and make a correct value judgment on things.Teachers should cultivate students’ critical thinking ability in English classroom teaching,so that students can improve their ability to distinguish specific phenomena in language and culture.At the same time,they should strengthen their ability of arranging and summarizing information,learn to construct new concepts,infer and analyze the logical relationship between information,make correct judgments on various ideas,use innovative thinking to express their views,and have multiple thinking and innovative consciousness.It can be seen that the cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability is of great significance to improve students’ English subject core literacy and reading level.However,many teachers pay more attention to language knowledge teaching in English reading and ignore the cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability mainly because the final evaluation of high school English in China is the college entrance examination,which makes students stay at the level of surface understanding of reading materials.Based on critical thinking theory,constructivism theory and interaction pattern theory,this study selected 100 senior one students from a senior high school in Lanzhou as the research objects.Using the critical thinking ability questionnaire and English reading tests as the research tools to explore the following two questions: First,can cultivating critical thinking ability have an impact on students’ critical thinking awareness? Second,can cultivating critical thinking ability improve students’ English reading achievements? In the experimental class,the researcher taught English reading according to the different dimensions of students’ critical thinking ability,namely,finding truth,open thinking,analytical ability,systematic ability,self-confidence,curiosity and cognitive maturity,so as to cultivate students’ ability to understand the contents of articles and promote the development of students’ critical thinking ability.The results show that the teaching of critical reading not only helped to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability and awareness,but also promoted students’ reading ability.Critical thinking ability is an important condition of critical reading awareness,which can promote students’ comprehensive ability of critical reading comprehension.This study made an empirical study on cultivating students’ critical thinking ability in English reading teaching.The enlightenment of this study is that the cultivation of critical thinking ability in English reading is effective and should be vigorously promoted in senior high school.The cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability should be integrated into senior high school English reading teaching,which can not only improve students’ critical thinking ability and interest in English reading,but also activate the classroom atmosphere,enhance students’ awareness of cooperative learning and discussion learning,and finally improve students’ comprehensive reading achievements.
