A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of A Brief History Of Contemporary Chinese Diplomacy (Excepts)

This translation practice report is based on the translation of the excerpts of A Brief History of Contemporary Chinese Diplomacy,which has explored China’s foreign strategy and policy since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.This report explores how this book can be translated into English in order to provide English-speaking readers with a better understanding of Chinese diplomatic history.The perspective of this paper is to analyze the linguistic features and cultural differences between the original text and the translated text from the perspective of Reiss’ s typology theory of texts and explicitation strategy of translation,and to develop a corresponding translation strategy.The research methodology of this paper is to collect reference materials and parallel texts,use translation tools,conduct quality control,translate the original text paragraph by paragraph,and make case studies of the problems encountered in the translation process.This paper aims to enhance the translators’ translation ability and provide some reference for the translation practice of academic texts.The report includes five chapters as follows: Chapter 1 provides an overview of the translation task,including its background,purpose and significance.Chapter 2 covers the source discourse description,main features of the book and target readers.Chapter 3 introduces the preparation of references and parallel texts,the explicitation strategy and Reiss’ s text type theory,translation tools and quality control.Chapter 4 analyzes the translation of specific discourses with a case study to solve translation difficulties at three levels.Finally,Chapter 5 is a summary,which discusses the findings and shortcomings of this translation practice.By writing this translation practice report,the translator has gained the following benefits:(1)For the translation of professional terms in academic discourses,the translator conveyed their meanings correctly by finding equivalent translations and explaining them.(2)For the difficulties such as professional terms and expressions,long sentences with Chinese cultural characteristics,and language and cultural differences between Chinese and English in the material,drawing upon Reiss’ s text type theory and explicitation strategy,the translator explored the difficulties in maintaining grammatical structure,retaining meaning and achieving fluency of translation at the lexical,syntactical and discourse level and provides the solutions to solve these difficulties.(3)The translation practice process has improved the translator’s discourse analysis ability and translation ability,providing some references for the translation of academic discourse.
