A Study On Metaphor Translation In The Governance Of China Volume 7 From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

The Governance of China Volume 2 is a compilation of CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping’s spoken and written works from August 18,2014 to September 29,2017 that allow both Chinese and foreign readers to have a full appreciation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.Based on The Governance of China Volume 2 and the Conceptual Metaphor Theory,this paper conducts a quantitative and qualitative study on all conceptual metaphors in the book.And from the perspective of the working mechanism of conceptual metaphor,this paper summarizes and analyzes the translation strategies adopted in the English version as well as the factors that influence the choice of strategy.This paper categorizes conceptual metaphors in The Governance of China Volume 2 into ten types,namely journey metaphor,building metaphor,war metaphor,human metaphor,plant metaphor,machine metaphor,disease metaphor,family metaphor,weather metaphor and animal metaphor.By calculating the resonance of source domain of each type,the paper also reveals the usage of conceptual metaphor in the book.The most employed type—journey metaphor—accounts for 58.07%of the total usage;building metaphor,19.40%;war metaphor,16.36%;hxman metaphor,2.16%;plant metaphor,1.49%;machine metaphor,1.17%;disease metaphor,0.68%;family metaphor,0.34%;weather metaphor,0.20%;and animal metaphor,only 0.13%.The study shows that five translation strategies are employed to translate metaphors in The Governance of China Volume 2,namely translating into conceptual metaphor of the same type,translating into conceptual metaphor of a different type,translating into simile,translating into non-conceptual metaphor,and translating non-conceptual metaphor into conceptual metaphor.It is also found that the linguistic factor and the cultural factor are influencing the choice of translation strategies.
