A Study On The Music Thought Of The "San Shen" Family In The Northern Song Dynasty

The "San Shen" family is the a scholarly family in the Northern Song Dynasty includes Shen Kuo,Shen Gou and Shen Liao.There are large amounts of studies about Shen Kuo while only few about Shen Liao and Shen Gou in the academic circle.This thesis started by combining the internal evidence books Dream Pool Essays,Cloud Nest Collection and Poetry Anthology of West Pool,wrote by San Shen,with other historic materials based on external evidence and the research results of contemporary scholars.And from the perspective of the history of music thought,the author adopted the research method of "significance is commonplace" to summarize their individual music thoughts through respectively analyzing their historical materials of music.According to the method of induction,study starting from individual music thought to family music thought,eventually the author will sum up their common characteristics of musical thoughts of "San Shen" family under the social background of the Northern Song Dynasty.The first chapter studies "San Shen",which involves temperament number and other musical ideas,including three aspects: one is the basis of number;second,the interpretation of law;the third is the connection of qi.Through the relationship of "number","rhythm" and "qi",it reflects the order of heaven and earth,which together constitute the unique musical universe in ancient China.The second chapter conducts research on instruments and musics to explore the characteristics of the music education of the "San Shen" family.It is featured by three aspects from paying attention to "Taoism" to "Benefit" and even to "Art".While focused on the political use of music,it also pursues to the performance of musical aesthetics and musical skills.Chapter Three is to extract their characteristics of musical thought by combining their personal experience.Shen Kuo and Shen Gou are the figure closest to the power center in the family.Therefore,their musical thought is influenced by politics,which emphasizes cultivating the moral self by Confucianism.Shen Liao was relegated thus tended to withdraw from society and live in solitude,besides his thought featured by using Buddhism and Taoism to cultivate himself.The music thought of the "San Shen" family in the Northern Song Dynasty is embodied in three aspects.One is the music view of universal connection and holistic thinking.Secondly,the characteristics of its music practice form are unformed and guided by philosophical thoughts,while the characteristics of its music knowledge form and music philosophy form are already formed and can be felt.Third,the music thought of the "San Shen" family was influenced by both Confucianism,Taoism and Buddhism.The integration of these three thoughts is also an important feature of the music thought in the Northern Song Dynasty.The music thought of "San Shen" family plays an important role in the development of music thought in the Northern Song Dynasty.This thesis aims to make a contribution to the research of Chinese music thought history by analyzing their thoughts.
