| The investigation of visual prompts in simultaneous interpreting(SI)has a rich history,centered around the utilization of PPT or views of the speaker.While these visuals are pertinent to this thesis,they differ in nature.Drawing upon previous research,this paper posits that real-time machine translation at the bottom of the screen may decrease cognitive load by allowing interpreters to focus on other crucial parts of the ongoing interpreting task.The focal point of this paper is to investigate the effects of visual prompts on the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting:a case study of student interpreters.The objective of this paper is to ascertain whether the inclusion of visual prompts in SI can reduce interpreter’s cognitive load,so as to improve interpretation quality,and then explore which aspects benefit most from visual prompts to measure the necessity of incorporating visual prompts into SI training.To achieve the above research objectives,this paper employs a mixed research method of qualitative and quantitative research,with all results triangulated.Qualitative research method encompasses interview methods,while quantitative research methods consist of questionnaire surveys and experimental methods.The contribution of this study lies in testing the assumption that machine-assisted simultaneous interpreting software can enhance interpreters’ SI performances,focusing on the growth path of interpreters,providing recommendations for student interpreters and software developers,and dissipate the exaggeration on technological support around the subject——the exaggeration surrounding the effectiveness of CAI tools in assisting interpreters with terminology retrieval in their workflow without being too cumbersome to use and without taking up precious cognitive resources needed for the interpreting task itself from a perspective of empirical study.By employing Gile’s Efforts Model as a theoretical framework to scrutinize the failure sequence and problem triggers in student interpreters’ experiments,this paper explores whether the inclusion of visual prompts can relieve interpreter’s overall load,thereby significantly enhancing interpretation quality.The results of this study showed that:1.Compared with the control group,the experimental group only had statistical significance in "accuracy".Combined with the questionnaire,experiment and interview,it is found that visual prompts do not actually have a significant impact on SI,but it could be used in SI training to help students build up confidence.2.The accurate translation of terms and numbers is a basic skill of a qualified interpreter.The more experienced the interpreter,the higher the accuracy of interpretation in these two aspects. |
