A Report On The Translation Practice Of Kinoshita Shunan

The text chosen by the translator is "Kinoshita Shunan" from the book "Amamori Yoshisu Kinoshita Shunan",a historical text similar to a biography,which presents in chronological order the important people and events in the life of Kinoshita Shunan,a Confucian scholar of the Edo period in Japan.The translator’s study of this historical text,Kishita Shunan,is of value to the study of Japanese history.This translation practice report will combine Chesterman’s translation specification theory applied in practice,follow the expectation specification and professional specification proposed by Chesterman,adopt various translation methods from three levels of syntax,semantics and pragmatics,and discuss the guiding significance and effect of the theory on the overall grasp of text translation and the selection of specific translation methods.In order to make the translation conform to the expression habits of the target language readers,to make it easier for them to read,and to deal reasonably with words or phrases from the unique Japanese cultural background,the translator can adopt a professional and standardised translation strategy,play a subjective role and choose the appropriate translation method according to the unique vocabulary and culturally loaded words in the text and the need to convey the meaning,so as to optimise the communicative effect of the translation.After this study of translation practice,the translator came to the following conclusions.On the one hand,In view of the fact that this text,Shunan Kinoshita,involves references to ancient Chinese literature,historical terms and ancient poetry,a mere translation of the literal meaning of the original text would not be in keeping with the style of the original and would not meet the expectations of the target language readers of the translated text.Therefore,the translation of historical biographies should follow the narrative of the original text,accurately convey the information of the original text,and meet the expectations of the readers of the target language.Chesterman’s expectation specification requires the translation to reflect the target language readers’ expectation of the translation style,and to pursue the style close to the original text to enhance the acceptability of the translation to the target language readers.On the other hand,there are certain differences in the way of thinking and expression between the Chinese and Japanese languages.In order to make the translation conform to the expression habits of the target language readers,facilitate the readers’ reading,and reasonably deal with the words or phrases of the unique Japanese cultural background,the translator can adopt professional and standardized translation strategies and choose the appropriate translation methods to optimize the communicative effect of the translation.This translation practice report intends to conduct a descriptive study and analysis of the translation practice of Chapters 1,2,3 and 4 in the section of Kisha Shunan in relation to the Chesterman translation specification theory applied in practice,and to explore the guiding role and significance of the overall grasp of the theory and the choice of specific translation strategies.
