| Based on the National English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022),this research analyzes the use of lexical chunks in English writings and explores learning methods for junior middle school students.Lexical chunk refers to the meaningful linguistic continuum with grammatical structure and contextual meaning.Lexical chunk is an important factor affecting the fluency and accuracy of foreign language in communication.This study aims at exploring students’ the situation in which students use lexical chunks in English writings and discussing the factors affecting students’ lexical chunk learning,hopefully putting forward some methods for the learning and use of lexical chunks.The present study focuses on answering the following three questions: 1.What are the specific categories and features of lexical chunks in the English writings of junior middle school students? 2.What are the main influential factors affecting students’ lexical chunk learning and using? 3.What are the suggested method for lexical chunk learning and using for junior middle school students?This study takes 110 students from a junior middle school in Yibin as the research participants.Composition analysis,questionnaire,interview and classroom observation are used to survey the category and frequency of lexical chunks used in junior middle school students’ English writings and explore the factors influencing lexical chunk learning and using.The study aims to improve students’ awareness of and methods for learning lexical chunks.Via quantitative and qualitative analysis,the author finds that,1)The categories of lexical chunks students used in English compositions are relatively limited,which leads to a lack of fluency and logicality.The largest number of lexical chunks used is such categories as poly-word verbs and prepositional.Binomials and trinomials are not found in students’ writing samples,and students make many mistakes in lexical chunk use.2)The main influential factors for lexical chunk learning and use include the lexical chunks,the learners,and the frequency of practicing.3)Some learning methods are suggested for students:improving cognitive level of English lexical chunks;simplifying the categories of lexical chunks in order to minimize the difficulties of identifying lexical chunks;enriching the ways for lexical chunks input and output.Additionally the research results offer some implications for students and teachers to promote students’ learning,understanding and use of lexical chunks in order to improve students’ writing levels. |
