Since the new century,Shanghai has shone brilliantly on the modern stage with its unique geographical location and special political status, and the creation and research on Shanghai writing has also shown a vigorous trend.Writers of different generations and genders have poured their pen and ink into Shanghai since the new century, including writers Wang Anyi and Jin Yucheng who grew up in the new era,as well as a large number of young writers who injected fresh blood into Shanghai’s writing. These writers are concerned about the urban development of Shanghai and the new restructuring of its urban space in the process of modernization, resulting in various social issues and alienation of human nature.Writers use their cognitive attitudes and aesthetic emotions to express their understanding and life experience of the city of Shanghai, caring for the survival difficulties people face in Shanghai. In the text written in Shanghai in the new century,Shanghai not only serves as a city background, but more importantly, writers express the living habits, ethical cognition, aesthetic emotions, etc.of Shanghai people through urban space, thereby revealing the urban cultural characteristics of Shanghai and reflecting on the modernity of writers.Based on Lefebvre’s spatial theory, this article takes a holistic view of Shanghai’s writing since the new century from three aspects: physical space, spiritual space, and social space, and extracts the special significance of Shanghai’s spatial writing in the new century for examining China’s modernization process. The main body of this article is divided into three parts to discuss. The first chapter focuses on physical space, discussing Shanghai writing from two perspectives: urban space and home space.Through a comparative analysis of commercial blocks, cafes, and marginal spaces in urban space, this paper reveals the social problems caused by Shanghai’s two tiered urban space and the resulting urban temperament with vastly different styles;Through the analysis of specific places in the home space, starting from the subtle daily space,we can go deep into the texture of the city and explore the daily Shanghai. The second chapter mainly reflects the spiritual space of Shanghai citizens by grasping the emotional space, revealing people’s marriage choices and value judgments in the context of Shanghai’s commercialization; And the rapid establishment of new ethical relationships and family relationships based on reality in urban life. The third chapter focuses on people’s production and work. The intense turbulence in social space affects the daily communication and behavior standards of Shanghai people. The conclusion summarizes the significance of spatial writing in Shanghai in the new century, and points out the shortcomings of novel writing in Shanghai in the new century.
