Electricity plays a pivotal role in China’s energy mix,and electrical engineering is one of the core disciplines in modern science and technology. In a sense, the degree of development in electrical engineering represents the level of technological progress in a country.Currently, the technical development of the electrical engineering in China still requires a large amount of foreign scientific literature, and translation professionals are needed to introduce relevant technical materials. This translation project focuses on three English scientific papers in the field of electrical engineering, and it aims at helping domestic researchers know more research results in electrical insulation, and promoting technological innovation in this area.Scientific papers contain many complex and passive sentences, technical terms and polysemous words,as well as information such as figures, tables, and names of authors and their organizations, which pose challenges for translation. This report adopts a case study approach, analyzing the problems encountered by the translator when translating scientific papers related to machinery insulation and their solutions. The skopos theory provides guidance for achieving faithful and coherent translation, which helps to better meet the needs of the entrusting party and is widely applicable throughout the translation process.Through analysis, the translator found that accurate translation of names of authors and their organizations cannot rely solely on dictionaries, and internet tools should be used, along with choosing appropriate translation strategies based on the translation purpose. The translation of figures and tables also requires the use of machine-aided translation tools and picture editing tools to achieve content and form accuracy.Polysemous words in scientific papers have multiple aspects, and they require the fully use of terminology databases and corpora.Effective sentence coherence requires the translator to use translation methods such as the change of voice, adjustment of word order, conversion, amplification or omission, while textual coherence entails full consideration of the context of the relevant passages. |
