Social science texts convey the knowledge and research results of different fields of social science to readers with rigorous and understandable expressions, introducing the knowledge of a certain discipline to the public.Hence, these texts are of great educational significance and important media for spreading social science knowledge. In recent years, extensive social science texts have been favored by general readers, which leads to a great demand for the translation of social science books. The translation of social science texts has certain practical value and plays an essential role in the wide dissemination of human social science knowledge. The translation practice report is based on the translation practice of the social science text,The Humanistic Tradition: Romanticism,Realism, and the NineteenthCentury World. The text introduces history, culture, artistic tradition and other related knowledge to the general readers by edutainment in a relatively simple language. The translator carefully studies the text type and language features of the translated material under the guidance of Relevance Theory and draws up translation techniques for achieving optimal relevance at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels, combining with specific translation examples. At the lexical level, translation techniques such as amplification, conversion, semantic extension, negation and four-word structure are applied to accurately reproduce the information in the original text to reduce the reader’s processing effort and achieve optimal relevance at the lexical level. At the syntactic level, the translation techniques of transformation of voices, division and restructuring are used to translate and deal with long and difficult sentences, ensuring the semantic and logical relations of the sentences, increasing the contextual effect, and achieving optimal relevance at the syntactic level. At the textual level, three cohesive devices of reference, substitution and conjunction are converted to achieve textual cohesion, maintain the style of the translation consistent with the original text, enhance the readability of the translated text, and achieve optimal relevance at the textual level. This translation practice report discusses and summarizes the translation strategies and techniques of social science texts, with a view to improving the translation quality of social science texts and providing valuable and feasible reference for the translation of social science texts.
