| With the development of economy,China is moving to the center of the world stage.Chinese culture is bound to shine again,so telling a good Chinese story will help Chinese culture go out better. As the most dazzling pearl in the treasury of Chinese culture,Hongloumeng is well deserved both in terms of its literary value and its philosophical, historical, sociological and aesthetic significance. Therefore,it is also bound to attract the attention and interest of more and more foreign scholars and readers.Jia Yucun is the clue character of this novel,a witness to the rise and fall of the four families and a direct participant in certain events in the novel.A study of Jia Yucun‘s characterization through translation will help readers of the target language understand the whole story.Through the dynamic combing of relevant studies on social translation theory at home and abroad,it is found that the complexity of translation activities is determined by the social nature of translation and the translation nature of society, and many factors such as the social context in which translation activities arise, the life trajectory of translators in specific social context and the acquisition of translators‘capital should be included in the scope of translation studies. The transformation of the study of Hongloumeng from a single direction to a contemporary pluralistic interpretation is in line with the development of social translation theory, and therefore the theory is well suited to analyze the translation and dissemination process of Hongloumeng.Based on the theoretical framework integrated by Bourdieu‘s social practice theory and Latour‘s actor network theory, using a combination of comparative research and questionnaire, this study conduct an in-depth analysis of the translation and dissemination process of Jia Yucun‘s characterization in Yang‘s and Hawkes‘translations, and conduct a descriptive and interpretive study. It was found that the two translators chose different translation strategies and translation techniques for the translation of Jia Yucun‘s character image under the influence of different fields, capitals and habitus.Yang Xiangyi was more faithful to the original text in the translation process and tended to use the foreignization strategy, while Hawkes paid more attention to the fluency and readability of the translation and tended to use the domestication strategy. This study reveals the influence of certain subjective and objective factors on the translators‘ translation strategies and the dissemination and acceptance of the translations, and makes several suggestions. It is hoped that this study can provide a little reference for the research on the dissemination and acceptance of the English translation of Hongloumeng, and also help Chinese culture “go global”. |
