A Report On E-C Translation Of ASQ 2021 Global Traveler Survey Under The Guidance Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

The year 2020 began with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic,which then took a toll on people’s daily life and still persists today.As foreign countries and China eliminate restrictions and controls,the air industry is on the path to full recovery.The material chosen for this translation practice is the Survey conducted by Airports Council International(ACI).Using scientific research methods,the Survey covers 31 countries and regions and offers insights and forecasts for the recovery of the air industry.The English-Chinese translation of the Survey aims to provide implications and guidance for the industry’s recovery.The Survey is classified as an informative text,and for such text,accurately conveying the information in the translation is a priority.Given this,the translation shift theory proposed by Catford which emphasizes semantic correspondence is applied to guide this translation practice.Catford’s translation shift theory is highly practical when applied to translation practice,efficiently guiding the shifts that occur at the basic levels of words,phrases,and sentences.Level shift plays a crucial role in achieving the necessary grammar-to-lexis shifts in the EnglishChinese translation process.By following the guidelines of level shifts,the author shifts tenses,aspects and plural nouns of English into Chinese words to achieve a natural and accurate translation.Category shift,on the other hand,addresses the translation difficulties that arise in the process of English-Chinese translation from three aspects:structure shift,class shift,and unit shift.By adhering to the principles of structure shift,the translator can successfully cope with differences in active and passive voice,and in prepositional and postpositional attributives between the two languages.Class shift allows for flexible shifts between different parts of speech in translation,while unit shift is utilized to change one linguistic unit in the source text into the other in the target text to produce an authentic translation.For example,English words can be translated into Chinese sentences and phrases,while English sentences can be translated into Chinese sentence groups.In general,category shift helps to ensure that the translation is readable and consistent with the Chinese style of expression.Through the translation practice,the author has enhanced the translation competence of the likes of survey reports and gained valuable experience for similar translation tasks.Additionally,by detailing how Catford’s translation shift theory aids in addressing various translation problems,the report sheds light on the theory’s guidance in the translation of the informative text.It is hoped that this report will contribute to the further application of Catford’s translation shift theory in translation practice and serve as a useful reference and source of inspiration for translators working on similar texts.
