A Report On E-C Subtitle Translation Of The Documentary Intake From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

In recent years,the introduction of a large number of foreign films and TV dramas has not only enriched the spiritual life of Chinese audience,but also promoted the further dissemination and exchange of Chinese and western culture.In these rich and varied films and TV dramas,documentaries play an important role by virtue of their authenticity,humanity and aesthetic value.As a window and medium for domestic audience to understand western culture,foreign documentaries can meet the expectations and needs of Chinese audience to understand foreign culture.Military documentaries often focus on the life in military camps or war history,being gradually developed into a unique type.In the process of cultural transmission,the translation of documentary subtitles has a profound impact on the audience’s understanding and cognition of the content of the film.Moreover,the distinctive features of documentary subtitles also put forward higher requirements for translators.This report introduces in detail the problems and challenges encountered in the translation of Intake,a military-themed documentary,and discusses some practical translation methods and techniques applied in the translation of documentary subtitles.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory,it discusses how to solve the difficulties and questions encountered in subtitle translation of military documentaries on the lexical,syntactic and discourse dimensions,explaining the practical application of translation methods and techniques such as free translation,conversion,reduction,omission,repetition and addition by analyzing specific examples excerpted from the translation project.By writing this report,the author gains a deeper understanding of the relationship between translation theories and translation activities,and becomes more proficient in using translation methods and techniques to solve the difficulties and problems encountered in translation.Meanwhile,through the analysis of typical examples excerpted from the translation project,the report provides useful translation experience for subtitle translation of military-themed documentaries,offering some insights for other translators to improve the accuracy and readability of the target text while taking into account the features of subtitles.Moreover,the report gives new perspectives for future subtitle translation study,which is beneficial to the development of subtitle translation research in the future.
