Drama in Education is a teaching method in which teachers use drama elements in teaching and use special Drama in Education strategies to let students learn in drama activities,so that students can achieve learning goals in the process.Drama in Education has unique advantages in language teaching and it can improve teaching effect in English class.This study is based on the Whole Language Theory,Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence and Cooperative Learning Theory,using Drama in Education to carry out a teaching experiment in parallel classes to explore the positive influence of the application of this method on middle section primary school students’ English learning.The main research questions are(1)Can Drama in Education improve students’ oral performance?(2)What is the influence of Drama in Education on the accuracy,fluency,and complexity of oral expression of students at different speaking levels?(3)Can Drama in Education improve students’ participation for classroom activities and enthusiasm for oral expression?The experimental subjects selected in this experiment are 110 students from Class 2 of Grade 4 and Class 3 of Grade 4 of Daidao’ an Primary School in Tai’ an City.The data of the experiment are mainly from tests,observations and interviews.From the experimental data,it can be concluded that(1)The average score of oral English in class using Drama in Education was improved.There was a significant difference between the two oral tests scores in the experimental class.(2)The students were divided into three groups according to their pre-test scores,and they were further tested,observed,interviewed and compared.This method had different influence on students with different oral English scores.The students in the middle group and the high group had a more obvious improvement in the oral performance and the students in the low group had no obvious improvement in the oral performance.Through evaluating students’ different oral activities performance,in the experimental class,the fluency of the students in the high group was better than control class but the accuracy was slightly weaker.Students tended to output a sentence quickly and ignored the accuracy of grammatical structure.The accuracy and fluency of the middle group were better than control class.The accuracy and fluency of the low group did not have significantly differences compared with control class students.There was little difference between students in the accuracy of pronunciation in high groups,but there were more unfamiliar words in the control class,which made it difficult to speak accurately and fluently.The oral complexity of the students in the three grade groups were better than control class,which was highlighted in the number of output sentences and words in the free expression task.(3)This method can arouse students’ enthusiasm for learning English,improve the English classroom participation of middle section primary school students,and improve their enthusiasm of oral expression attitude.Overall,Drama in Education have positive influence on the English learning of middle section primary school students.This method can improve students’ oral English,but it has certain requirements for the basis of oral English.Students with better oral English scores improve their oral English more significantly than students with poor oral English scores.This method can improve the classroom participation of middle section primary school students and make students more willing to express themselves in English,which mobilizes the enthusiasm of middle section primary school in English learning.It is hoped that the results of this experiment can provide some experience for English teachers in primary school. |
