| The Short Story Magazine was planned and published by the commercial press with strong publishing strength in modern China.From its inception in July 1910 to volume 11 in 1920,it mainly published the novel content of "Mandarin Duck-Butterfly School".Due to the changes of the times and society,The Short Story Magazine faced the crisis of reader market loss.It was not until the reform in 1921 that the content and form of the novel monthly took on a new look that it got rid of the dilemma of being eliminated by the market and became one of the main communication positions of the "New Culture Movement".Taking The Short Story Magazine after the reform in 1921 as the research object,according to the social environment of China in the 1920 s as the context,using the methods of literature research,content analysis,data statistics and comparative research,combined with the text content,this paper summarizes the editing style and publishing characteristics of Shen Yanbing,Zheng Zhenduo and Ye Shengtao.In the late 1920 s,the May 4th Movement and the New Culture Movement had an impact on the publication of The Short Story Magazine,which prompted the reform of the commercial press.Shen Yanbing,Zheng Zhenduo and Ye Shengtao were successively replaced as chief editors.Taking "readers as the center and enlightening the wisdom of the people as their own responsibility",they have vigorously transformed the content of The Short Story Magazine,publish a large number of Chinese translated foreign literary works,pay attention to theoretical comments,publish children’s novels,and greatly increase the length of the novel,which not only enlightens readers’ thoughts and cultivates new readers,but also makes The Short Story Magazine show a new look and vitality.At the same time,they innovated the form of the novel monthly,opened interactive columns,revised the typesetting of contents and other parts,and adopted covers and illustrations with characteristics of the times.The successful reform in the editing and publishing of The Short Story Magazine after 1921 undoubtedly has enlightenment significance for the trend of the publishing industry in today’s rapid changes: always take meeting the needs of readers as the first meaning,adapt to the new changes of the market,pay attention to the hot spots of the times,adhere to the correct social value orientation to guide readers,and form a benign interaction between readers and the editing and publishing of literary journals. |
