The original text is excerpted from the biography The Power of Fine Examples:To Hand Down the Struggling Spirit published by Oriental Publishing House in 2021.The first nine articles are practice objects of this translation report, which are compiled by a team of journalists from Global People Magazine through personal interviews and in-depth research. These nine articles introduce nine recipients of the Medal of the Republic. The biographies are practical texts with the characteristics of authenticity and readability, aiming to give a true and comprehensive account of the people’s deeds;in addition, the language of the source text is concise and accurate, the terms covers many fields, the logic is clear, and the paragraphs are properly structured. Therefore,in the process of translation, the translator needs to pay attention to the readability of the translation to reduce the readers’ reading obstacles. On the other hand, the source text contains rich cultural information, and its large number of culture-loaded words and solid language skills reflect the authors’ profound humanistic knowledge. Therefore, translators need to emphasize the authority of the original authors and reproduce the language style of the source text. After clarifying the goal of this translation practice, the translator takes Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework of this translation practice.Macroscopically, this theory makes a comprehensive observation of language use from cognitive, social and cultural aspects;microscopically, the theory makes a comprehensive and detailed study of language choice and adaption. The source text consists of nine biographies, which systematically describes and introduces the life experiences and spiritual characteristic of the typical persons. The translator should fully consider the linguistic habits of the target readers in the social, physical, and mental worlds when translating;as for the large number of culture-loaded words and expressions in the source text, the translator should utilize her literary quality and cultural awareness to make linguistic choices with a high degree of meta-pragmatic awareness in the translation. Therefore, the theory can not only ensure the readability of the translation, but also guide the translation of culture-loaded words in the source text and improve the acceptability of the target text.To sum up,the translator selects appropriate translation strategies and methods according to the four angles of Adaptation Theory: structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlates of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability to achieve the ideal translation effect. This translation report is divided into five parts. The first part is the description of the translation task;the second chapter introduces the translation process;the third chapter outlines the basic content of the adaption and its application in this translation practice;the fourth chapter is the core part of this translation practice report, detailing in four aspects how the translator chooses different translation strategies guided by Adaptation Theory to achieve the above translation goals;the fifth chapter summarizes the shortcomings and defects of this translation practice.
