| Benjamin Edwards’ s series of paintings are based on images that he could see in his daily life all the time, reprocessing media images by means of transplantation and tampering, using figures, spatial representations, and shifting positions. He strives to replace real scenes with abstract geometric generalizations and to divide and reorganize a visual space that was originally monolithic. This article takes Benjamin Edwards’ mid-and late-period paintings as examples, and takes the expression of spatial concepts as an entry point, starting from the traditional Western picture space, and then combining it with the social and historical background of American development to explain the origin and significance of the expression of spatial concepts in contemporary painting. From the three aspects of spatial dimension, pictorial elements and expression forms,I will analyze the similarities and differences of spatial expressions in paintings of different periods and explores the spatial changes in their paintings. Finally,I will discuss how to use the space of painting to convey the content, thematic ideas and influence extension of specific works in the context of my own artistic creation. It is expected that in the process of research, the spatial expression and the dynamism of visual activity in contemporary painting can be understood anew, and the profound significance of space to contemporary painting can be understood more deeply. |
