A Comparative Study Of The Comic Works Of China News Award Andpulitzer Prize

This paper takes the award-winning cartoon works of the China News Award and the Pulitzer Prize of the United States from 2016 to 2020 as the object of comparative study,and analyzes the topics,visual discourse,visual grammar and visual rhetoric of the two countries’ cartoons in combination with the relevant knowledge of Journalism and visual rhetoric.By discussing the similarities and differences between the two countries’ comics,we can fully understand the creative characteristics of news comics at home and abroad at this stage and the role of visual rhetoric in comics,so as to put forward suggestions for the development of Chinese News comics.The first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the research background,research purpose and significance,concept definition and description,literature review,research content and methods,and the innovation of this paper.Introduce the China News Award and the Pulitzer Prize,and explain the awards of comics between the two countries from 2016 to 2020.The second chapter analyzes the topics of Sino-US award-winning news cartoons.In terms of the content of the topic,the Chinese News Award cartoons give attention to both political and social themes,while the Pulitzer Prize cartoons mainly focus on political themes;In terms of the scope of topics,China news prize cartoons pay attention to both domestic and international issues,while Pulitzer Prize cartoons pay more attention to domestic news.Even in international issues,they only pay attention to international news closely related to their own countries;In terms of the attitude towards the topic selection,the attitude of the China News Award cartoons is both positive and negative,with the purpose of showing achievements and critical education,while the Pulitzer Prize cartoons are all critical satire,with the purpose of expressing the author’s views and attracting readers’ attention.The third chapter analyzes the visual discourse of Chinese and American award-winning cartoons.The cartoon discourse of the China News Award focuses on the warning discourse attacking the corruption of government officials,the praise discourse praising the continuous improvement of people’s living standards in social changes,and the discourse worrying about international security in international relations.The visual discourse presented in the Pulitzer Prize cartoons focuses on political content,including the discourse of bipartisan disputes in political elections and Party policies,the discourse of racism behind racial discrimination and the discourse of international terrorism.By interpreting the relationship between the visual framework and the language picture of comics,we can find the method of constructing visual discourse.The fourth chapter discusses the visual grammar of Chinese and American award-winning cartoons.From the perspective of reproduction significance,both Chinese and American cartoons have a high degree of narrative reproduction;From the perspective of interaction,China News Award comics all provide category views,while American news comics are better at using "asking" to enhance the interaction between comics and readers.In the use of power relations,Chinese News cartoons all use the view of equal relations,and less use of other relations.Among the color modality,Chinese News comics have a slightly weaker ability to use color,while Pulitzer comics have a higher value of modality and can better use color saturation contrast to express modality;From the perspective of composition meaning,both China and the United States award-winning cartoons achieve the construction of image meaning through the use of information value,salience and viewfinder.However,in terms of the aesthetics of cartoons,the Pulitzer Prize cartoon style is more exquisite and aesthetic,the beauty of China News Award cartoons is mixed,and some cartoons are too rough.The fifth chapter analyzes the visual rhetoric of Chinese and American news cartoons.Both news comics of the two countries use common rhetorical devices such as metaphor,symbol and comparison.However,the proportion of various rhetorical devices used in Chinese News comics is higher than that in American comics,and the superposition of rhetorical devices is more than that in American comics.In addition,there are some differences in the use of some rhetorical devices between the two countries.The sixth chapter puts forward the development strategy of Chinese news cartoon.First of all,China’s news comics should improve the rules in the award mechanism and strengthen the requirements for the artistry of comics;Secondly,China’s news comics need more financial support,and relevant departments should provide more platforms to train professional comics talents;Thirdly,cartoonists should improve their artistic accomplishment,be good at creating cartoons by means of visual rhetoric,and also improve their painters,so that cartoons can achieve the perfect combination of journalistic and artistic;Finally,some suggestions are put forward on how to tell the meaning of Chinese stories in the international communication of news cartoons.The seventh chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the similarities and differences between the Chinese Journalism Award and the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoons found in the study,obtains enlightenment,and points out the shortcomings and limitations of the study.
