| Photojournalism has its own merits in communication and become a very important means for communication. Nowadays, people are living a more stressful and fast-paced life. Therefore, it is understandable that most people prefer an easier and clearer way to receive information. It has been an image-reading era since people’s demand for images becomes increasingly stronger, and news photojournalism turned to be an indispensible and a more revealing way for communication, especially for disseminating disaster-related news. Great news photography can freeze the moment of news events and present it to the audience in a memorable way.Pulitzer Prize is the most authoritative recognition of a journalist in the United States, which also has great influence worldwide. The selection of prize-winning work can, to some degree, reflect cultural value of the certain society, and can also be an indicator of upholding value of one country’s news industry. The analysis of Pulitzer Prize mainly focus on its written work, the prize-winning photography, however, was not studied as thorough as those written work. This paper analyzed the visual frames of Pulitzer prize-winning breaking news photography from 1996 to 2015, finding that visual frame of "suffering" is the most frequently used frames in disaster news photography. Based on the analysis of the visual frames, this study also attempts to discover the characteristics of the disaster-related works which make them influential and memorable.This study also attempts to discover the value reflected in the prize-winning photography, which pays great attention to the professionalism, the disadvantaged groups and the media’s function as a watchdog. This thesis not only attempts to reveal the characteristics of disaster related Prize-winning work of breaking news photography, but also tries to provide some advice on Chinese News Award, which is also the most influential award for Chinese journalism.This study does not include all the prize-winning photography, focusing on recent 20 years only. Besides, the prize-winning feature photography is not analyzed in this thesis. In future study, a longer time span and more categories can be pursued. |
