In the history of American literature,Indian literature has experienced a process from marginal to mainstream literature. In the 1960 s,the Indian Renaissance launched the first shot of Indian literature in the American literary world.More and more writers devoted themselves to the creation of English literature in order to compete for the national discourse power.Since the 1970 s and 1980 s,China has successively translated some American Indian literary works and incorporated them into the compilation of American literary history. As a part of translated literature, the process of Indian literature entering China shows the characteristics of the times. In this cross-cultural exchange process, there is a certain fit between American Indian civilization and Chinese national culture. This fit is related to the particularity of Indian literature. To some extent,it also affects China’s choice of American Indian literature translation.Translation is a hybrid activity, which will be restricted by various factors in the process of translation.Only by clarifying the complex relationship can we present the real face of translated literature. Therefore, this paper takes the translated American Indian literature as the research object to explore its translation motivation, translation strategies and acceptance status in China.Starting with the translation works, the writing of domestic literary history and the translator group, this paper arranges the translation and introduction process of American Indian literature in China, and finds that the translation of Indian literature is still in the rising stage. The translator group is mostly academic translators with multiple identities. In the process of translation, the role of the translator has changed from "spokesperson" to "behind the scenes".This change of translation strategy,It reflects the means of Indian literature entering the Chinese literature market. In this translation journey, the introduction of the domestic new literary and art policy and the new pattern of China’s diplomatic relations provide an opportunity for translation from the outside, while the active integration of Indian literature into the white world and the communication effect of Indian poets in China provide a more direct motivation for translation. As far as the translated texts are concerned, the translation selection of Indian literature presents ecological, anti colonial and traditional cultural colors, and this choice is closely related to the context of the Chinese era, literary needs and the social functions undertaken by the texts. The emergence of these texts is of positive significance to deconstructing cultural colonialism, promoting the development of Chinese ecological literature and promoting the transformation of Chinese traditional culture. It is these unique translated texts constructs the Chinese image of American Indian literature. The first is "imaginary ecological Guardian",which not only comes from the intuitive ecological feeling of Indian literary works, but also the imaginative shaping of Indian images by readers. The "ecology" of Indians shows the "creative rebellion" of translation. The second is "the singer of national tradition".The recognition of this image comes from Indian writers who integrate traditional witchcraft, mythology and Canon into modern literary forms. At the same time, they also inherit and innovate the traditional narrative mode.Although Indian writers are close to the English mainstream world, they have not lost the Indian national tradition.Writing in English is only their means of voice, not their full recognition of the mainstream society. The third kind is "rebels standing on the edge".The marginality of Indian literature in American literature is self-evident.Their voice is doomed to the posture of resistance. This resistance presents gender differences in the eyes of Chinese readers. The resistance disaster of female writers and the resistance despair of male writers constantly enrich the definition of "resistance",and reveal the embarrassment and contradiction between the white world and the Indian world in Indian writers,It is in the media communication and readers’ acceptance that American Indian literature has initially constructed the literary image in China and formed its own unique representative symbols. |
