Real space is constructed based on figurative geographical modules, while virtual space is built based on abstract literary textual elements. The erosion of built entities through time, natural disasters, and man-made conflagrations meant that real space was destroyed, while the aggregation of texts that wrote about material objects continued to be added to,deleted from, and selectively passed on in the age of codices. The two kinds of ―South‖ at the level of geographic regions and administrative divisions and the textual world and cultural imaginary dimensions are not identical, and the material concepts, elements, and representations of the ―South‖ may have been transformed long ago, while the poetry generated based on the textualized territory of the ―South‖ depicts a rich and colorful textual picture of classical Chinese poetry in name and reality, seen and unseen, absent and present. The evolutionary journey of Tang poetry not only shows an extension of ephemerality but also an expansion of the co-occurrence of the real space in the imaginary world of literary texts.Through close reading and analysis of the textual material in Tang poetry to understand the content of its works, this paper endeavors to restore the intellectual understanding of the overall geographical map of the empire and the functional perception of the southern cultural region by the people of the time in the social context of the Tang dynasty, and on this basis,to summarize the presentation of the ―new South‖ literary symbols. The study will reveal the specific textual transitions and qualities of Tang poetry in the southern region from the perspectives of human geography and socio-cultural studies, which are crucial to a deeper understanding of the historical lineage and diversity of the development of Tang poetry. The texts chosen for this research are mainly Mid-Tang poetry, not to ignore the historical fact that the southern region had been developed to a certain extent during the Late Tang and the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms periods, but rather to provide an overview of the multifaceted impact of the chaos of the An Lushan Rebellion on Tang society from a macro level, extending to the presentation of literary creation. This research will use representative poets as a concrete entry point to gain a greater understanding of the real life in the southland in a specific social context, and to present their journey and self-examination in the face of the southland. The structure and framework of this study are divided into four main parts. The introduction analyzes the necessity and importance of the research and defines the core concepts to clarify the main research object, followed by a precise grasp of the relevant domestic and foreign academic results and a clear understanding of the main research methods. The first chapter provides an overview of the real space of the ―New South‖ from two dimensions: the natural environment and the social environment, and explains that the objective physical characteristics of the southern region inevitably had a physical/psychological impact on the Mid-Tang literati living there. The second chapter focuses on the process of the overall characteristics of the imaginary world of the ―New South‖ from empirical writing and local writingthistwo levels, and examines the fact that when faced with the unfamiliar southern region, the Mid-Tang literati used to seek familiar textual materials from past literary traditions firstly, and then wrote poetry based on their personal experiences when they were ready to adapt to the land. The third chapter focuses on the specific literary symbols of the ―New South‖ from the perspectives of individual identity and group circles, exploring the potential power of texts in the poetry of the literati of the Mid-Tang period to construct a private space as opposed to the public affairs space constructed by socio-political mechanisms,in which the mainstream and the periphery, the group and the individual, the center and the local were competing and compromising in this imaginary field.Thusthe tensions of literature are fully manifested. The literati who migrated to the southland were shocked and surprised to see the special landscape of this land, andhardship of the fate, uncertainty of the return, and hopelessness of the future can be said to have continued throughout their southern migration experience. In their poetry, they not only drew on the literary traditions of previous generations to write about the strange and savage wilderness of the south, but also gained the opportunity to re-examine themselves, position their identities and view the world in their isolated dwellings, far away from the place of noise--the Court and the Capital--and relied on the potential power of the text to construct a private space as opposed to the space of public affairs. When the ―South‖ is gradually labeled and symbolized, the goal of reshaping the ―new South‖ in the imaginary world is achieved through literary means. The world of words turns to dominate the world of objects, and literature and space are mutually fulfilling. The texts produced in the process of rewriting the South build a palace of eternal and immortal memories, and the cultural traditions and treasures they contain are worthy of continuous exploration.
