The Consecutive Interpreting Strategies For Premier’s Press Conference From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

The Premier’s Press Conference starts in March annually after the end of Two Sessions,and it is held by the government.As one of the official channels for the Chinese government to release news,the press conference always catches the eyes of media from all over the world The differences in grammatical structure and way of thinking between Chinese and English,as well as the on-site pressure will bring enormous challenges to interpreters.It is crucial for interpreters to choose the appropriate interpreting strategy.Nowadays,there are many studies on the consecutive interpreting strategies of press conferences,but they focus too much on the theoretical perspective such as Relevance Theory and Interpretive Theory,resulting in a great number of repetitive studies.And the studies are limited to the level of cultural vocabularies and long and difficult sentences.In this thesis,the author will take Translation Variation Theory as the theoretical guidance,take the Premier Li’s Press Conference in 2016-2021 as research material,use the text analysis method to study the interpretation text,and try to summarize strategies of the Premier’s Press Conference interpretation from three aspects:lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level.Through the study,the author found that:(1)the strategies of amplification and paraphrasing are respectively used to interpret words with Chinese characteristics and network catchwords to facilitate the audience’s comprehension of the speaker’s words;(2)the strategies of amplification and omission are respectively used to interpret non-subject sentences and address semantic repetition,so the interpretation of interpreter can be smooth and concise and reduce the burden of the interpreter;(3)the strategies of combination and editing are respectively used to enhance the syntactic logic and rearrange information so that the logic of interpretation will be strengthened and key information will be highlighted.Based on Translation Variation Theory,applying five interpreting strategies like amplification,omission,combination,paraphrasing and editing according to different context is of great significance to consecutive interpreters.The author hopes that the research will provide some references for interpreting learners and professional interpreters.
